1.
Two step process:
1. Gerrymandering the districts. They chop up the Republican areas into as many districts as possible and group the Democratic districts into as few districts as possible. This is done, it’s not fair, but the Democrats do it themselves. Here’s a link that shows the Republicans bragging how they kept the House despite the American popular vote favoring the Democrats.

2. Change the electoral college rule in all of the swing states that give the victor of the majority of districts won those district’s electoral votes and an additional 2 electoral votes (instead of giving the victor of the popular vote of the state all of the electoral votes). A state worth 13 electoral votes in which 90% of its citizens live in the city could conceivably give 12 of those votes to the country-side Republican candidate while awarding the Democrat (who took, say, 70% of the vote) only one electoral vote for the city. Using this model in all 10 of the swing states (9 went to Obama) would have awarded Romney the election despite a 5 million vote majority for Obama.

This should be a non-partisan argument. Do you think the wishes of the Republican Party to win the presidency should out-weigh the wishes of the country?

This was made possible by the 2010 election. Democrats fell asleep at the wheel and Republicans picked up 9 more governorships. 30 out of 50 states had Republican governors just in time for the Census that allows them to redistrict their states. I care about the 2014, 2016 and 2018 elections, but I now realize the 2020 election is more important than any of them.

and you support rigging the vote to counteract the will of the population? This is a blatant attempt to defy the people.

Republicans face a choice that can best be characterized by personalizing it. A healthy, optimistic party is Reaganesque, convinced that it can win the future by embracing it, and by making a positive case for its philosophy and candidates to all Americans. A party in decline is Nixonian and fears the future; it sees enemies everywhere, feels overwhelmed by electoral trends, and thinks it can win only by cheating, by subverting the system and stacking the deck in its favor. Whose presidency was more successful, Reagan’s or Nixon’s? Which man made the Republican brand more appealing?
