View Full Version : NRA Says Congress Will Not Pass Weapons Ban

Not to make non-stop threads on the issue, but this one was worth it's own. I hope this is true and Congress won't support this dumb ban. All that will be left is whether or not Obama will try to circumvent or try a end around.
The National Rifle Association president says Congress is not likely to pass a new ban on assault weapons.
David Keene tells CNN's "State of the Union" that right now the powerful gun lobby has the support in Congress to block a new assault weapons ban, but he's not discounting any proposal backed by the full power of the White House.
Senior members of Congress have pledged to ban assault weapons and limit the sale of high-capacity ammunition magazines like the one used to kill 27 people, most of them children, in Newtown, Conn., last month.
Vice President Joe Biden is expected to send a comprehensive package of recommendations for curbing gun violence to President Barack Obama on Tuesday, including universal background checks and bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

I can only say ... resist whatever curbs are threatened. The Left always works to disempower the individual. They want a culture of dependence. Curbing gun ownership is one way of doing it.
Over here in the UK, it's VERY difficult to own a gun. Consequently - and this is no coincidence - the many decades we've had of Socialist Governments have led to an anti-gun culture. So, if a burglar invades your home, if a thug threatens a family, if a mugging occurs ... almost certainly, gun ownership is NOT any line of defence. Instead, one must call the police, be dependent on the authorities for help.
Run that concurrently with soft court sentencing, or soft laws which help the criminal, in a bid to be 'enlightened' .. and even that sham of a defence disappears.
[The EU is insisting that we give our prisoners the vote .. so it could even, ultimately, be a vote WINNER to soften laws up .. !!!]
No. Put a spanner in the works, folks, and resist any Leftie ploy to disempower you. A Government that cared about your welfare would not seek ways to damage it !

This is totally against my nature, but I have to agree with the NRA on this one. I'd like to see a high capacity magazine ban, background checks, and national registry.

No, Congress won't pass anything against guns at this time, all are agreed.
It will have to be Executive Orders, if anything is done at all. That's what both Bush and Clinton did, so it should be very doable..............................
Assuming they aren't afraid it will touch off a revolution. I'm impressed by how many smart people are becoming aware there is a cliff edge here, somewhere. The administration may have to take that into account.
I am expecting delays at least, for that reason. For Obama to get re-installed as prez and ban some guns at the same time.....could be viewed as a little too provocative. We'll see, he might do it all at once.

Do you ever bother to look anything up to see if you're right or not?
Clinton did NOT do an Executive Order for his assault weapons ban.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Assault_Weapons_Ban
The Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB), or Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act, was a subtitle of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violent_Crime_Control_and_Law_Enforcement_Act) of 1994, a federal law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_law) in the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) that included a prohibition on the manufacture for civilian use of certain semi-automatic firearms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-automatic_firearm), so called "assault weapons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon)". The 10-year ban was passed by Congress (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Congress) on September 13, 1994, and was signed into law by President (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_the_United_States) Bill Clinton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Clinton) the same day.

And what makes you think that such measures would stop there ?
I know you didn't ask me, but I'd like to take a whack at your question:
Because it didn't last time is one reason. Assault weapons and high-capacity magazines WERE banned for ten solid years, after all, and there was no total firearms ban that resulted.
Another reason is that the USA is too big, and has too much of a firearms culture, and as some other threads here point out, the statistics are against a gun ban: the more guns, the more crime DROPS, incredibly. To take guns from Americans would be like saying we all have to take mass transport: what? how? couldn't be done. Same with guns. Forget the dangers of burglars and robbers for a moment: I am on a sheep list where some ranchers in the north really do have to shoot grizzly bears and wolves. They put many big free-range sheep dogs in with their flocks, a ratio of one per several hundred, they fence, they do everything, but I remember the post by this sad woman in Montana, rode out around the fences one morning after one of their dogs came back to the house hiding and whimpering, and found this huge sheep kill with bear tracks and another kill with dozens of wolf pack tracks. She said sadly, "I suppose tomorrow it will be panther tracks." We canNOT do without some guns, it's just too big and wild a country.
The problem is just these assault rifles: the psycho video game players (ALLLLLLLL the psycho killers, except maybe the old felon who killed the firefighters, are known to have been been shoot-'em-up gamers) who go kill as many children as they can have adopted these scary guns as their weapon of choice. It's a meme, contagious. Get rid of the assault weapons and the high-capacity magazines and I think we'll have to use other solutions for dealing with what happens then. You can't stop all the crazies, as Britain well knows, but I think it's time to start trying to make a dent in it instead of watching the death toll get higher and higher and the time between mass murders shorter and shorter, as is going on now.

MA is correct, neither president banned weapons via executive order, and the ban from 1994-2004 simply expired and hasn't reached enough support since. The ban is interesting too - as what people don't want to talk about is the impact of the ban, which was virtually none.

The assault rifle ban did sunset, and nothing very remarkable happened because of it, except that more and more since then these AR-15s have become the weapon of choice for almost all mass murderers. I've been reading that both Clinton and Bush DID have weapons bans by executive order also, so I'll have to look that up at some point for the citation.
And the time between mass murders, spree killings, is getting shorter and shorter and there are more and more of them. I'd like to see that pattern go the other way. There are people here who will refuse to accept any changes even when the spree murder rate is every day with an average of 40 children or shoppers killed daily, but I think this crime needs to be stopped or at least slowed down.

The yearly rate of death/murder based on guns has DECREASED since the assault weapons ban expired. The sensationalism and media has increased dramatically since. But in the end, the pattern of someone killing another with guns, has steadily decreased.

I've already done that in many cases and this fact is very easily validated online. I'm not going to keep doing it over and over. If you or anyone else wants to start a thread showing all (that's all, no fair cherry-pickiing) the famous spree killer murders and what weapons were used for each, that would be interesting. In most recent cases the AR-15 was used (usually a Bushmaster -- they aren't going out of business now by coincidence, after all). The kid who shot up that Korean college earlier in 2012 used a 45 automatic, I read, if that makes you feel any better.
It doesn't do much for me, though........
I'd like rampage murders to slow down, not more and more at shorter and shorter intervals, as we are seeing now.

A Bushmaster can't be an AR-15. Bushmaster is a manufacturer as-is Armalite who makes the AR-15. The Bushmaster .223 is very similar. In both cases, nothing more than a fairly tame rifle made to look scary. But this shows what I'm talking about, that you are confused about what weapons have been used. It couldn't have been the same weapon over and over, and then 'usually a Bushmaster'.

A "game"? Expecting someone to backup the words they write here? That's not a game, that's simply discussing and debating. And it's NOT ar-15's AND THAT IS WHY you cannot post proof, and NEVER DID as you claim.
I'm sorry, mundame, but you don't get to simply state whatever you want to and not expect others to call you out on things you make up out of thin air. And if not made up, then you should be able to easily backup what you say with links or other proof. You have made up SO MANY things now related to the AR15 and other gun related issues, that it's actually kinda a little funny, if it weren't such a serious subject.
You're not interested in these "games" all of a sudden, because someone is demanding proof for what you REPEATEDLY keep saying, and then suddenly the conversation comes to a halt again when asked for backup/proof, which has now happened in MANY threads.
I asked politely, and repeatedly, and never get an answer. Then you claim you already answered, but then refuse to link to where you did so.
mundame, you're mostly clueless when speaking about guns, gun facts and the shootings over the years. You are spouting out complete falsehoods left and right. Then you make US out to be bad guys when we shake our heads at certain statements and ask for proof of them. You can keep repeating this gibberish if you like, but your credibility on any gun related subject is now zilch.

It's not a lie; it's true.
Look it up. Show me, by sourcing from news reports, a recent mass killing that DOESN'T use an assault weapon, an AK-47. Usually a Bushmaster AK-47! Bushmaster isn't going out of business now by coincidence, you know.
Here's one, dumb ass.
http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012...-massacre?lite (http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/12/14/15913678-gunmans-mother-owned-weapons-used-in-connecticut-school-massacre?lite)
The gunman was clad in black and used two 9mm pistols to kill 20 small children and six adults at the school. It was unclear how many shots were fired there.
Two 9mm handguns, one made by Glock and the other by Sig Sauer, were recovered inside the school. An AR-15-type rifle also was found at the scene, but there were conflicting reports Friday night whether it had been used in the shooting.
Now, this is the same example I posted in another thread where someone made the same incorrect claim you did... that an AK-47 was used, specifically a Bushmaster AK-47.
Again, you are either abysmally stupid, or a liar.
Which is it?
You can't even remember what you post from thread to thread.... BushmasterAK-47.... Bushmaster AR-15... etc etc etc.
You're not interested in solving problems... you're interested in whining like a stuck pig, spouting proven fabrications, and claiming moral superiority where you have none.

I don't have an issue with mundame or her stance. If someone wants guns 'they' feel are dangerous, off the streets, so be it. I just try my best to understand as much as I can about guns, and point out what I know to others. I can't imagine anyone wanting certain guns banned, or the Feds wanting guns banned, if they aren't knowledgeable about what specifically they are banning.
I think we can all agree that the goal is to protect or save lives. We all disagree on how we get there. Gun bans, registrations, checks, clips... But I think we can ALL agree, that we should know or learn as much as possible about what we may ban or regulate, as this is citizens RIGHTS at stake here.
An AR15 is really very little different than an ordinary hunting gun, just made to look different. So if one is willing to ban a 'scary' but ordinary hunting gun, then tell me why the ordinary hunting gun won't be next on the list to ban? And if you ban large clips, which take just a few short seconds to swap, then why wouldn't similar but smaller clips be next on the chopping block? And if it's extended checks, then how long before the information that is collected grows in length?
But at the VERY, VERY least, ANYONE involved should understand the difference between semi-auto and auto, and the power/ammo that is being shot. There's a LOT more to it than that, but for starters that would be good.
You can go to pretty much any gun manufacturers website. Go to the pages where these guns are, those in the same classification as an AR15. Should all be banned? Even those that look like a hunting rifle and act like a hunting rifle?

funny... their website doesn't say they are going out of business...
http://www.bushmaster.com/index.asp
Maybe they posted a sign out front saying "Going out FOR business". That could have confused mundame.

any luck with that link????
Don't ask for links, just take others at their word, even when their word is hilariously wrong and very easy to prove. Asking for a link is akin to bullying, don't ya know? :poke:

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:OfficeDocumentSettings> <o:AllowPNG/> </o:OfficeDocumentSettings> </xml><![endif]--> Obama, today, came out with his executive orders and his call for legislation. Is it what you expected? Is it what you feared? Did he stomp all over your rights?
NRA, in an ad today, called Obama an elitist and a hypocrite for being “skeptical” regarding having armed guards at schools to protect children when his children are protected by the secret service. Do you even conceive how ignorant that argument is? What would happen if a child of the 1st family was kidnapped? Some of the more brazen of you would say “Goodie!”. But, really. That cannot happen and has nothing to do with the argument. As usual, the NRA leadership does not represent their members in this incendiary rhetoric. They want to scare people to buy guns. That’s all they care for.
Rush Limbaugh, on his show this morning, made fun of children begging for their lives. Where are the “Christian morals” in your party? Conservatives rail about their religious rights in all subjects except their own Christian responsibility to care for someone other than themselves. Rush went on to make blubbering noises like a child crying for his/her life. Is that funny in conservative world? Can you imagine what these 20 6-7 year old children looked like after taking 3 to 11 5.56 rounds to their four foot tall bodies? They weren’t just shot; their small precious bodies were turned to chum.
Obama called for legislation covering all subjects that are reasonable and responsible. He wants an assault weapons ban, background check, and large magazine ban. His executive orders were not over-reach; they involved setting up committees and prompting organizations to study. Your side was way wrong in their assessment of what he was going to do. They went on today to still say that he was over-reaching. There isn’t one single thing he’s proposing to do that doesn’t have the majority of the country’s support. In his executive orders, he even supported the NRA ideas. Is Obama really just trying to fix the symptoms or trying to fix the causes? He’s covered every facet and your party, in their silence (in most cases) and outrage (in too many cases) is setting itself up to be a minority party for decades. Keep it up extremists. To quote your hero George W., “Bring it on!”.

This is totally against my nature, but I have to agree with the NRA on this one. I'd like to see a high capacity magazine ban, background checks, and national registry.
Hows about when you buy personal property you fill out papers and get the FBI to do a background check on you every time.
You do understand that they don't issue "we cleared you cards" so you don't need to do it with each gun I hope?
Imagine you buy a new TV or a car and they have the FBI check you out for each item, over and over and over. You really want this?
All a gun amounts to is personal property. First Guns then your TV sets.

His executive orders were end runs around Congress. You remember Congress , dont ya? The body charged and delegated to pass laws by our Constitution! Not obama , not the President! Congress, so obama decides to usurp their authority yet again and issue his edicts!
He should be impeached immediately for this and charged with treason!--Tyr

I wonder how many congress critters were bribed by the NRA for them to make such a definite statement?

I've already done that in many cases and this fact is very easily validated online. I'm not going to keep doing it over and over. If you or anyone else wants to start a thread showing all (that's all, no fair cherry-pickiing) the famous spree killer murders and what weapons were used for each, that would be interesting. In most recent cases the AR-15 was used (usually a Bushmaster -- they aren't going out of business now by coincidence, after all). The kid who shot up that Korean college earlier in 2012 used a 45 automatic, I read, if that makes you feel any better.
It doesn't do much for me, though........
I'd like rampage murders to slow down, not more and more at shorter and shorter intervals, as we are seeing now.

narcissist.
Marcus. Exactly like Obama. Always has to know people are thinking, and talking about him. And it doesn't matter whether it's good, or bad...AS LONG AS they are talking about him, or using his name.
Same Narcissistic kind of person, whether we call them Obama, or Bingster.
