HuffPo poll shows 22.8 percent of Americans support their state seceding (http://legalinsurrection.com/2012/11/huffpo-poll-shows-22-8-percent-of-americans-support-their-state-seceding/) http://legalinsurrection.com/wp-content/themes/legal/images/comments.png (http://legalinsurrection.com/2012/11/huffpo-poll-shows-22-8-percent-of-americans-support-their-state-seceding/#comments)

With the news that 50 states now have presented secession petitions on the White House’s “We the People” website, Huffington Post conducted their own poll (http://big.assets.huffingtonpost.com/yougovsecession.pdf) to determine national support for the idea. Four questions were asked to ascertain 1) awarness of secession, 2) support for secession in general, 3) support for Texas to secede, and 4) support for their own state to secede. Below are the results to the fourth question, “Would you support or oppose >your< state seceding from the United States?”

Strongly support 12.4%
Tend to support 10.4%
Tend to oppose 10.3%
Strongly oppose 41.6%
Not sure 25.3%
These results, which were collected November 14-15 with a sample size of 100, were released at 5:37pm EST Friday under the headline “Secession Poll: Majority Opposes Their State Seceding From The Union (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/16/secession-poll_n_2147048.html),” a technically accurate but somehwhat “minimalist” approach to headline writing.

It seems more than striking–and headline worthy–that 22.4 percent of Americans “strongly” or “tend to” support their state seceding. Coupled with the more than 700,000 signatures (http://foxnewsinsider.com/2012/11/14/people-in-all-50-states-sign-secession-petitions-after-obama-re-election/) that have so far been signed onto various states’ petitions, a case is building for more than the normal post-defeat malaise.

And the White House has announced that they will respond (http://dcist.com/2012/11/presidential_party_poopers_white_ho.php) to the secession petitions that meet the 25,000 signature requirement by December 9, when the first qualified petitions (including Texas) expire.

If President Obama thought he had a task to unite the country in 2008, just look at the divisions he’s having to heal in 2012. Forward?

I'm pretty sure this succession has been around for many years.

We have a similar thing in Australia where every couple of years, Western Australians (the biggest state) talk about breaking away from the rest of Australia.

Funny thing, my point was that 1/4 or less 'support' these individual distractions.

Your point?

I wouldn't just dismiss this as a bunch of kooks. We see a very divided country with a dysfunctional government whose actions are making the lives of its citizens miserable. There are two diametrically opposed philosophies at work in the country and they cannot be made to work together. One the one side is the belief in a powerful centralized government that provides cradle to grave benefits to its citizens. On the other is the belief in a small government with limited powers. I don't see how you can reconcile the two. Furthermore, people are identifying less with America and more with their race, orientation, political party affiliation...

It will be reconciled by events. Either the next four years will be ones of great expansion and widespread prosperity with low unemployment and higher family wealth proving that an activist government and a dominant Democrat party brings our nation to a better place or the opposite will be proven.

The opposite was proven the first four years and we got the lying bastard for another. I demand justice, not just the relief of his not getting a third term. He must be brought to justice in a Court of Law! If not it will be he end of this nation. How long can any nation stand when it celebrates , glorifies and rewards damn traitors? His party , the dem party must be utterly destroyed. For they actively work to destroy this nation, they have become powermad ,totally corrupt creatures deserving destruction IMHO. -Tyr

Only to the degree that the body politic recognizes that the cradle to grave crowd has had a 'fair shot.' It's one of the reasons I believe that the opposition should state their opposition to each step, then 'defer' to the 2012 election results as 'the will of the people.'

Was this tongue in cheek? Or, if it goes well it's credit to the Dems. Badly, it's still Bush' fault, right?

While the secession numbers are still small enough to be inconsequential, what may be important is that the number of people actually considering the idea for the first time is relatively huge. We could be witnessing the start of something big.

If some is able to drop lumber and nails from a helicopter and it lands as a well built house, we should recognize that person as a great home builder. Better lucky than good.

I would recognize them as someone who has the press on their side.

Not if they explain why they believe the policies to be wrong, why they will fail; yet not obstruct the 'will of the people.' Refuse to be seen as the cause of failure. Every damn step of the way.
