Romney Talks Bluntly of Those Dependent on Government

10:48 p.m. | Updated WASHINGTON — During a private reception with donors earlier this year, Mitt Romney described almost half of Americans as “people who pay no income tax” and are “dependent upon government.” Those voters, he said, are likely to support President Obama because they believe they are “entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it.”

Mr. Romney, the Republican presidential candidate, acknowledged on Monday having made the blunt political and cultural assessment, saying it was “not elegantly stated” but standing by the substance of the remarks by insisting that he had made similar observations in public without generating controversy.

It's often bandied about that 47% of American workers pay zero (or less) income tax. The "less" comes from those who get the Earned Income Tax Credit, a sneak form of Federal Welfare for low income earners.

Liberals have been working for decades to shift the burden of paying income taxes, from low-income people to middle- and Higher-income people.

It has been a long-term goal of the left, to get at least half the population to a point where they pay no income taxes at all.

Once that is achieved, the left can be assured that none of their bills to increase income taxes by 10%, 20%, 50% or whatever, will EVER be voted down by a majority, since the increases will never apply to the majority. And that most of their other tax increases will be able to ride on the coattails of that major fact. Mitt Romney's recent coment, addressed that fact.

Many philosophers have pointed out that, in a pure democracy, the majority has it in their power to disenfranchise and enslave the minority. That is exactly the left's goal: To put the people who earn most of the U.S.'s income, into a minority, where they can no longer prevail in votes to take away their income.

Actually, no. We'll leave that to the Democrats.

Conservatives should simply push for conservative things (smaller government, less taxes and spending, more personal responsibility, government getting out of programs not authorized by the Constitution etc.), and devote most of their effort to explaining WHY they are doing them any WHY people should support them. If they were to do that (for the first time in thirty years), enough normal Americans would vote for them that they wouldn't have to modify their "policies" to pander to this group or that group.

Actually Romney has one job right now and that is to get elected. If he fails that by offending voters then he has zero opportunity to enact conservative change. BTW, no one is talking about "pandering," even Romney acknowledged his less than "eloquent" remarks.

Unlike most polls, that one makes no mention of how many Democrats, how many Republicans, Independents etc. they asked. I wonder why not?

Most polls ask far more Democrats than Republicans. And surprise, surprise, the results almost always come out in favor of Democrats! This despite the fact that it appears that slightly more Republicans will probably vote on Nov. 2012, than Democrats.

This poll did indicate:

Samples are weighted by gender, age, race, Hispanic ethnicity, education, region, adults in the household, phone status (cell phone only/landline only/both, having an unlisted landline number, and cell phone mostly).
Notice that any weighting for political affiliation (Dem, Repub etc.) is strangely absent.


Demographic weighting targets are based on the March 2011 Current Population Survey figures for the age 18+ non-institutionalized population living in U.S. telephone households.
The CPS counts things like income, gender, race, etc. etc. as described. But it does not count things like how many Republicans and Democrats.

Very convenient for pollsters trying to act like they are running a reliable poll.

Excuse me, but for Charlie Rangel saying how people need to pay their fair share in taxes, is like Al Capone complaining about the high crime rate in Chicago






New York, NY – Congressman Charles B. Rangel issued the following statement in response to Gov. Mitt Romney's remarks saying 47% of the American people do not pay federal income taxes and nearly half of voters are "dependent upon government":

"Nothing can be further from the truth than Gov. Romney's ridiculous remarks that nearly half of American people do not pay federal income taxes, they pay other federal and state taxes. The 47 percent figure cited by the Republican presidential candidate covers only the federal income tax and ignores the fact that people may pay a higher percentage of their income on a wide variety of taxes.

Everyone pays taxes. Lower income persons pay state and local, property, excise and sales taxes. In fact, when all federal, state, and local taxes are taken into account, the bottom fifth of households pays about 16 percent of their incomes in taxes, on average. The second-poorest fifth pays about 21 percent. This is higher than what the Governor has paid in income taxes. He has absolutely no moral authority to accuse nearly half of the American people of being irresponsible and freeloaders.

Many of his millionaire and billionaire friends -- approximately 55,000 -- are paying lower taxes than millions of middle-class Americans. In fact, in 2009, 1,500 millionaires managed to pay no federal income taxes on their millions. Before he judges other people about paying federal income taxes, Gov. Romney should come clean about the tax returns he's hiding from voters."
