Senior vice president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Russ Rader told the Register, “the bottom line is that when speed limits go up, deaths go up. When speed limits go down, deaths go down,” Rader said.
Can it get any more facile? More tickets, higher premiums! We know where his bread is buttered. Why not go for a national 35 MPH speed limit?
Many of those deaths have involved drivers losing control or driving too fast for existing conditions
There are also more cars on the road over time. Therefore, if you want to reduce traffic deaths, the solution is road rationing or fuel rationing similar to WWII. Fuel rationing would also be good for the environment and save people money. To prevent a black market, private fuel sales could be prohibited under threat of incarceration. THAT is the socially responsible solution.

It is blatantly obvious that cars kill people. There are more cars than people in the US. We should ban all cars except those used by law enforcement and key government officials.

Why not ban cars altogether?
The facts are that most interstates were designed for speeds of 70 or more, accidents are more numerous and severe with higher speed differential, and most folks tend to drive at a speed that they are the most comfortable. So if you set an artificially low speed limit, you'll have some obeying the law and some doing what is comfortable for them, hence higher speed differentials, hence more accidents and they will tend to be more severe.

The most deaths do not come from driving too fast.
The most deaths come from following too closely for whatever speed you're driving.
If these people were actually interested in saving lives, rather than simply in controlling those around them, they would campaign about tailgating, not speeding.
Let me know when you see such a campaign. Then you'll know they are actually trying to save lives, not just obstruct traffic.

They'd also campaign to put some teeth into the laws that require a "leftist"to stay in the right lane unless he's passing.

Changing the national speed limit these days would be a joke, and too expensive to enforce.
We have unqualified people driving already. A large percentage of them Ignore the Laws...if they even know them. With the cutbacks on police force size due to the economy. There aren't enough police officers available to enforce the laws we already have.
Not to mention how...Most states, or municipalities CAN'T AFFORD to fix the roads...much less REPLACE speed limit signs again, and even state, and local Highway crews have been cut back as well.
So. Unless we can force Obama...all by himself, to be everywhere at once, 24/7.
55 Miles per hour is the same kind of dream as ONE DAY work weeks, with Saturday being the only day anyone earns their pay.

So what some of you are saying is that any laws you don't agree with are invalid and don't need to be adhered to. Right?
Even more reason why we need to adopt some aspects of Sharia Law. Catch someone speeding, chop their foot off. Bet they don't do it more than twice.
