TRENTON, N.J. - A 60-year-old woman became a mother, twice over, when she delivered a pair of boys Tuesday. Frieda Birnbaum gave birth to "Baby A" at 12:44 p.m. and "Baby B" a minute later by Caesarean section at Hackensack University Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Nancy Radwin said. The twins each weighed 4 pounds, 11 ounces, she said.

"The mom is in recovery, and she and the babies are doing really well," Radwin said, declining a request to speak with the mother.

Hospital officials believe Birnbaum may be the oldest woman to give birth to twins in the United States, Radwin said.

Birnbaum, a psychologist from Saddle River, underwent in-vitro fertilization last year in Cape Town, South Africa, at a center that specializes in older women. She and her husband, Ken, a New York attorney, have been married for 38 years and have three other children — sons ages 6 and 33 and a daughter, 29.

Birnbaum told Fox News she wanted her younger son to have siblings closer to his age and wanted to remove some of the stigma attached to older women giving birth.

Coincidentally, Tuesday was the birthday of twins born one year ago to a 59-year-old woman — also to a New Jersey woman. Lauren Cohen gave birth to Gregory and Giselle on May 22, 2006, at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia.

Cohen said Birnbaum contacted her after seeing her name in a magazine and that the two quickly became friends.

"We talked about babies; I suggested things that would be helpful when you try to feed two babies simultaneously," Cohen said.

No, thats what Viagra and Cialis is for. In-Vitro is some type of fertilization for the woman. It's not approved in the US thats why they goto Africa.

Theres nothing wrong with it, but its a situation where she now needs to understand whether or not shes gonna be around while the child grows up. If this was on purpose, then I hope she thought this through, but if not, I hope she will figure this out!!!

This is one of the most selfish acts I've ever heard of. A 60 year old woman doesn't have the energy to raise one, let alone two children. These kids are pretty much going to have to take care of themselves, all because mommy doesn't want to live with the fact that her biological clock has run out. She'll likely be dead before either of them gets married, but she doesn't care just as long as she gets her kids. This woman has NO business having kids.

Bringing a life into this world is far from being selfish. With the effort these people put into getting and staying pregnant. They really wanted and want this child. I very happy for them.

Exactly. It's all about what THEY want, not what's best for the child. It is cruel to the child to try to raise the little bundle of energy from a walker. The poor kids're gonna have to raise themselves, get picked on in school for having a granny mom, and will probably be shopping for nursing homes before they even graduate high school, much less pick out their own houses. This woman thought of nothing more than her desire to have her kid and is no different than those sluts on Maury Povich who want babies they can't raise before they can even drive.

Bringing a life into the world...is a very beautiful thing..

But....being able to care for the life should be a major part of the decision of having a child..

I think 60 is too old...When the kid's are 10, she'll be 70 yrs old....Good grief..

I agree with Nevadamedic they wanted these children, so what if they are old. They will be loved not only by their parents but by their siblings as well!

Aaaaaaa yes....It doesn't matter that these kids will be worrying about taking care of their parents.....by the time they are 20..

What a burden to put on a CHILD...

I'm in my 50's...and I'm worrying about my mother passing any yr..

I agree with Hobbit.....this was a very selfish thing of this women...

Back before in vitro......this women wouldn't of been able to have a child....after 50yrs old....as was intended.....Sheeesh...

I agree with Nevadamedic they wanted these children, so what if they are old. They will be loved not only by their parents but by their siblings as well!

This is the same feel-good logic that has led us to let gay couples and singles adopt children. Despite what John Lennon may have said, love isn't all that's needed. While they're infants, they'll need somebody who is able to wait on them hand and foot all day and night, an exhausting prospect for people in their 20s, much less 60s. When they get old enough to walk, these kids will likely be able to outrun their own mother quite easily. Once again, I've seen couples in their 20s wear themselves out trying to keep up with a toddler. When they're old enough to start elementary school, these parents are going to have serious problems keeping up with all the activities kids of that age need. Who's going to teach them sports? Mom and Dad will probably break a hip trying to teach them. What happens when the kids get stronger than Mom and Dad far sooner than normal and their parents don't make effective disciplinarians? Then, as mentioned, what happens when the kids are just barely out of high school and the parents can't take care of themselves anymore. It was hard enough for me at 22 to lose my great-grandmother, and I saw that coming a mile away. I don't even want to think what it would be like for me to be here at 24 and my parents being either dead or in a nursing home.

Kids need far more than just love, and this couple is barely young enough to provide a decent pair of grandparents, much less parents. They're only thinking about themselves, and not the well-being of these children they so selfishly brought into the world.

You people just need to be openminded.

Careful there. If you get too open-minded, your brain just might fall out.
