Anything I post today cannot be used against me. Believe it or not, just got home, and first thought was to visit you bastards. Surgery was a success and was on table from 8am till 11:30. Then in recovery for 2 hours, then back to ambulatory surgery where I convinced them to let me go home and heal. I'm sure I am going to be quite miserable when this morphine disappears, but my wife is at CVS getting other medications filled.
Rather than use the same incision on left side of neck, now I have a new and bigger incision on my right side.
And I'm groggy, and probably gonna sleep till tomorrow. My main issue besides the pain, is a VERY sore throat and itching as if the beginning of a cold. So water, lozenges, pudding, ice cream and maybe eggs is all it is.

I honestly saw her in my dreams earlier! And then I slowly came to and that young candy striper turned into a 300lb behemoth. Hence me being home early, I ran home!
Ok, my wife is super pissed that I cam online here instead of resting. Back to the master bedroom with ice chips, lozenges, TV and my doggies for now! See ya'll later, and thank you very much everyone for the well wishes!
Wishing the best...and prayers for you! Hurry back. :)

What is it with you men and not being able to follow doctor's orders.
Go to bed, rest, heal .... or you'll end up back in that room with the 300 lb behemoth!!!
Glad your wife came home and got you back on track. Get well soon!

I'm feeling that mistake right now. I woke up a short while ago in sweats. I stood up, and when I coughed I doubled over. The pain hurt in my back and chest for some reason, and of course the back of my neck where the bone is, even though they went through the front to get there. I have my neck brace back on now, which immediately made the area feel better, and once all my meds kick in it will be back to bed for me. This is what happens when you think you're healed and stronger than you are. You leave groggy and full of meds and think you're invincible. My wife tole me for quite awhile last night that I shouldn't be sitting up and I ignored her. Now I pay the price! LOL

If Jim had her for a nurse likely he wouldnt be here posting!!!!!!!!!!! Reminds me of a beautiful gal that I dated back in the mid 70's. I guess she'd be close to 60 now! And surely wouldnt be hot like that any more.-;)
Pic caused me to forget this, -Take it easy Jim, dont let that knot on your shoulders attached to your neck cause you to ff up your recovery.

When trying to get out of bed, I have to roll on my side and fall out. It's as if my abdominal muscles were operated on. The pain is worse than when I do crunches! Is this type of pain normal after a surgery, even one that was nowhere near the operation? I know they put a tube down my throat, maybe something from that?

Off hand I'd say you should be in bed more, typing less, medicated more , sleeping more for at least two full days.
Being a stubborn dog much like I am has its drawbacks my friend. 48 hours makes a huge difference in recovery but rushing things does too in the opposite direction.-Tyr

Speaking in my capacity as a British bastard (ask anyone ..), wishing you the best for a speedy, if also careful, recovery. Don't overdo things, keep the press-ups to a minimum ...

Yay Jim, the worst part is over. Now you can heal and hopefully the pain will be gone.
We will do our best to entertain you while you are recovering.
But since we all know what your next request will be: No boobie pics, sorry!

Barely slept last night but never got out of bed. I tried different positions but my entire body hurts. I don't get it, the vertebrae area at the back of my head at the base of my neck is sore obviously. There's barely any pain at the incision at the front. But after the medicine wears off, my chest, stomach muscles, ribs area and legs hurt like hell. I read about the following on many sites but this is a short description. Sound right maybe?
Anesthesia and Muscle Pain
After surgery the incision is sometimes not the only area of discomfort. Discomfort can occur in relation to nausea and vomiting, sore throat, or muscle pains. You may experience an everyday sort of discomfort in the neck, shoulders, back, or chest that comes from lying for a prolonged time on an operating table designed not for comfort but for stability, durability and access. Perhaps surprisingly, muscle pain can also be a result of a particular drug used during anesthesia.
Postoperative Muscle Pain (Myalgia)
Severe muscle and joint discomfort that may be experienced after surgery is known as postoperative muscle pain (myalgia). This is a fairly common, quite distressing, but rather interesting condition. It usually appears on the first day after surgery, is often described as feeling similar to the pain one might suffer after unaccustomed physical exercise, and is usually located in the neck, shoulder and upper abdominal muscles.
There are a few theories about the cause of postoperative myalgia, but it is usually attributed to the use of a muscle relaxant drug called succinylcholine. Hence this is sometimes referred to as "scoline pain".
Succinylcholine and Scoline
If the muscle relaxant succinylcholine, also known as scoline, has been used during anesthesia, this may in some patients cause generalized aches and pains in the muscles for two to three days. This drug is sometimes used routinely, though less so now than years ago, and also has a special place in situations when the anesthesiologist needs to place a breathing tube in the patient's throat (intubate) very quickly. These pains, often referred to as scoline pains, are more prevalent in very muscular and fit patients.
What Causes the Pain?
Although the problem of postoperative myalgia has been recognized for many years, the exact way in which succinylcholine causes this muscle pain is not fully understood. Most believe that it is due to uncoordinated contraction of muscles that occurs a few seconds before the muscle relaxation that is the desired effect of the drug.

And I get to remove the dressing from the incision area later today. It looks like a ton of gauze, but the tape almost looks like a "packing tape", clear but smoother. I hope it comes off easily and doesn't pull too much on the wound area. I'll post pictures if it looks cool!

jimnyc: Worst is over now. Remembering how all of that felt myself. Maybe you'd like to share your first experience at taking a pee without being able to look down. When I had my upper spinal surgery on the back of my neck. The navy corpsman who escorted me to the head told me how to AIM.
Just thought you might have a little funny story for us.
In any event. Get well. Follow the doc's orders. All will be 100% better soon.
