WEST DONEGAL TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Police have arrested four local men in connection with the shooting death of a 65-year-old West Donegal Township, Lancaster County, man. And they said that the crime was random.
Ray Diener, 65, was shot and killed on his front door step the night of Wednesday, May 2. Police said the crime was a random robbery and that the only thing taken from him was his cell phone.
"They were driving in the neighborhood to look for a residence to target for a burglary or a robbery. This specific residence was selected at that point in time. It had not been targeted previously," said Lancaster County District Attorney Don Totaro.
Officials said the suspects went to the door, rang the doorbell and asked Diener to use a phone, claiming their car had broken down. Officials said Diener gave the suspects his cell phone, but at some point, he and Abraham Sanchez, 18, scuffled. Sanchez then shot Diener three times, officials said.
Court documents show that Diener's wife, Barbara, was asleep at the time of the shooting. She told police she woke up to screaming and went to the front door. Court papers stated that Barbara Diener saw her husband on his knees, leaning forward on his face. She said she saw two men standing in the yard near her husband.
Police arrested the following four suspects, starting at 1 a.m. Wednesday morning:
Abraham Sanchez, 18.
Robert Baker, 20, of Mount Joy.
Lorenzo Schrijver, 21, of Elizabethtown.
Emru Kebede, 16, of Mount Joy.
All four are charged with criminal homicide, robbery and criminal conspiracy. If you would like to view their mug shots, click here.
Police said none of the suspects had any connection to Diener.
"We're satisfied, but we still have a lot of work to do," said Lt. Carl Steinhart of the Northwest Regional Police Department. "It's pretty frightening when you think about it. This is supposed to be a calm, rural environment and here we have this kind of violence coming to our area. So we're frightened by that."
Police said the arrests were made as a result of a tip call that was placed to Crime Stoppers.
"1-800-Crimestopper works. It's a wonderful thing. And we obviously need the support of the public at all times," said Steinhart.
