Obama blasts ‘dishonest’ Romney-Ryan attacks over MedicareBy Olivier Knox, Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/author/olivier-knox/) | The Ticket (http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/) – 2 hrs 43 mins ago
President Barack Obama charged Wednesday that Mitt Romney and running mate Paul Ryan are looking to slash Medicare benefits while leveling "dishonest" attacks accusing him of doing the same thing.
"They are just throwing everything at the wall to see if it sticks," Obama told a rowdy crowd of supporters in Dubuque on the third and final day of a bus tour through Iowa.
The president said his approach had "strengthened Medicare" and added 10 years to the program's lifespan, even as it enacts "reforms that will not touch your Medicare benefits, not by a dime."
"My plan's already extended Medicare by nearly a decade. Their plan ends Medicare as we know it," he charged. "My plan reduces the cost of Medicare by cracking down on fraud, and waste, and subsidies to insurance companies. Their plan makes seniors pay more so they can give another tax cut to millionaires and billionaires."
...
But the Washington Post has an interesting article:

Romney’s right: Obamacare cuts Medicare by $716 billion. Here’s how. Posted by Sarah Kliff on August 14, 2012 at 4:54 pm
The Romney campaign has gone on the offense on Medicare, charging that the Affordable Care Act “cuts $716 billion” from the entitlement program.
That $716 billion figure is one you’ll probably be hearing a lot about during this election cycle. It’s worth understanding where it comes from and what the spending reductions mean for the Medicare program.
First, where it comes from. On July 24, the Congressional Budget Office sent a letter (http://www.cbo.gov/sites/default/files/cbofiles/attachments/43471-hr6079.pdf) to House Speaker John Boehner, detailing the budget impact of repealing the Affordable Care Act. If Congress overturned the law, “spending for Medicare would increase by an estimated $716 billion over that 2013–2022 period.”
As to how the Affordable Care Act actually gets to $716 billion in Medicare savings, that’s a bit more complicated. John McDonough did the best job explaining it in his 2011 book, “Inside National Health Reform (http://www.amazon.com/Inside-National-Health-California-Milbank/dp/0520270193).” There, he looked at all the various Medicare cuts Democrats made to pay for the Affordable Care Act....
