University of Chicago beats Harvard, Yale on Forbes' top colleges list
(Crain's) — University of Chicago's undergraduate program has made it one of the top American colleges, the only Illinois institution to make Forbes magazine's top 10 list.


The rankings, released online today (http://www.forbes.com/top-colleges)and appearing in the Aug. 20 edition, were prepared for the publication by the Center for College Affordability & Productivity.


U of C was ranked fourth. Topping the list was Princeton University, followed by Williams College.


The rankings were based on a school's postgraduate success, student satisfaction, amount of student debt, four-year graduation rate and number of competitive awards such as fellowships that students have won. The rankings "do not attempt to assess a school's reputation, nor are they a measure of academic selectivity," the magazine said on its website.


The ranking isn't too different from where U of C landed on another publication's closely followed college rankings. Last year, U of C was ranked No. 5 (http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/university-of-chicago-1774) on U.S. News & World Report's list of the top universities in the U.S. — behind Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Columbia, in that order.
Forbes ranked 650 American colleges in all. Here are the top 10:


1. Princeton University, N.J.
2. Williams College, Mass.
3. Stanford University, Calif.
4. University of Chicago, Ill.
5. Yale University, Conn.
6. Harvard University, Mass.
7. U.S. Military Academy, N.Y.
8. Columbia University, N.Y.
9. Pomona College, Calif.
10. Swarthmore College, Penn.



And here's how some Illinois schools fared:
22. Northwestern University
86. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
341. Illinois Institute of Technology
360. Loyola University Chicago
381. University of Illinois at Chicago
512. DePaul University
646. Columbia College Chicago



Forbes, working with LinkedIn Corp., also looked at which schools had the most entrepreneurial alumni. That is, highest number of alumni who have started companies with at least 10 employees.
Stanford University came out on top, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Northwestern University showed up at No. 14, while U of C did not make the top 20.

Cal-Berkeley is not known as a research institution. It doesn't offer a wide variety of doctoral degrees. Most California students interested in academic research and fellowships attend Stanford.
Stanford was my No. 1 college choice in high school. I was accepted as a student, but they only offered half the academic aid that Cal did. Since my parents had no money, I accepted the higher aid package.
