My best friend in Austin has been sending me regular updates about a hotly contested primary for a Texas seat in the Senate. It matched David Dewhurst, the current Lt. Gov. and a GOP insider, against upstart Ted Cruz, who won the endorsement of the Tea Party.
Dewhurst was a huge favorite and received millions of dollars from the GOP establishment outside the state. Cruz won a grass roots campaign that opposed big spending GOP candidate.
Dewhurst lost a lot of ground with a negative campaign that attacked Cruz' character. Cruz countered with plain speaking and got endorsements from Sarah Palin and others.
