The USNS Rappahannock, a fuel resupply ship, fired on what two U.S. officials called a "small, white pleasure craft" 10 miles (16 kilometers) from the Dubai port of Jebel Ali.
The small boat appeared to be headed for that port, the officials said, adding that their information was preliminary. The U.S. ship verbally warned the smaller boat when it was 1,200 yards (1,100 meters) away and fired at least one warning shot before the decision was made to fire shots to disable the boat, the officials said.
"In accordance with Navy force protection procedures, the sailors on the USNS Rappahannock ... used a series of non-lethal, preplanned responses to warn the vessel before resorting to lethal force," the Navy said in a statement.
"The U.S. crew repeatedly attempted to warn the vessel's operators to turn away from their deliberate approach. When those efforts failed to deter the approaching vessel, the security team on the Rappahannock fired rounds from a .50-caliber machine gun."
Officials described the course of events as standard procedures when a small boat gets too close to a U.S. Navy ship.

The Iranians might try on "swarming," when dozens of little boats, some loaded with explosives, zoom confusingly around the big ship, in and out, close. They've done swarming before.

I have often wondered what could be achieved if even a fraction of the US military budget were put to better use to advance scientific discoveries to make all of our lives better instead of living with the threat of all out war.

You could halve the US military budget and still spend way more than the nearest rival, China. With 2010 figures that's about $340 billion.

What could you do with $340billion?

Obama's 2013 Clean energy research budget is $27.2b
The US National Institute of Health budget is around $30b
NASA's budget is about $17b

Imagine if those budgets were raised? Imagine what could be discovered? What could be achieved?

Instead all that money is tied up pointing missiles all over the place. Tell me that is logical?

Well... there were plenty of innocent families gunned down at US checkpoints in Iraq a few years ago because of confusing hand signals or orders barked at them in English.

the Cole was no joke, but it was done by terrorist. The Iranian do not need to use pleasure boats to attack they have rockets on shore that could do that if they REALLY want to attack. But are not stupid and if they wanted to attack U.S. ships with proxies to make it look as if they were not the ones who did it they could.
Though to many Americans all Muslims look alike so whoever the Prez pointed the finger at some of the population would buy it without question, no matter what evidence to the contrary might show.

But on the other hand A small terrorist group could have as a goal to stir up a war with Iran to have the Shia regime on it's back. The Saudis with its well known connections and support of Alquida could do a false flag operation and make it look AS IF the Iranians did it. The wiki leaks papers showed they want the U.S. to attack them. they've got the cash to help pull it off that's for sure.

Then there's a less likely plan, since Cheney and Crew are out of office, but you never know. It was reported a few years back that Cheney wanted to do a false flag on Iran with boats painted in Iranian style and U.S. soldiers posing as Iranians attacking U.S. ships. the plan was rejected. I suspect that's just what this is about. Testing to see what happens, and if they paid an Indian fishing boat to collect the info and get shot up, all the better, because next time they'll hope we won't fire.

I think if boats come close, they need to be shot out of the water. Single small boats packed with explosives and swarming flocks of zooming power boats, some of them loaded with explosives, are the new naval tactic. One of my wife's Uncles worked there and said it was a safe and modern society. But if you were involved in terrorism, you had a target painted on you.

I do believe the soldiers that did it were reprimanded. It doesn't compare to the pals setting up rocket sites in school yards full of kids.

Pal leaders keep groups of kids around them at all times to protect themselves from Israeli strikes.
