So how surprising should it be that now, in times that try men’s souls to a far lesser extent, Americans are also broadly divided when it comes to, well, just about everything.

When I look at the Republicans, I am tempted to dismiss them as the Treason Party.

Seriously, were a band of traitors to concoct a series of positions deliberately designed to weaken America, they would be hard pressed to beat the current GOP dogma — hobble education, starve the government by slashing taxes to the rich, kneecap attempts to jumpstart the economy by fixating on debt, invite corporations to dominate political discourse, balkanize the population by demonizing minorities and immigrants and let favored religions dictate social policy.

What gave me pause, however, is that they beat me to it — for 15 years the Republicans have been treating Democrats as if believing in a government that addresses our common public problems is a form of sedition. Given how uniformly wrong they are, I’m loathe to use any of their tactics, even one that has been so stunningly effective, convincing millions of Americans their best interests lie in coddling the rich and their champion is a stiff, dressage-riding multi-millionaire.

And I am reminded that, often in American history, from John Adams to Rosa Parks to the anti-war movement, being branded a traitor turns out to be a badge of honor.

You know what? it does still matter. They might not have been "gods", and they sure as hell weren't the greatest people to ever live. But they had morals. they were in a time when people CARED. They wrote this to have a nation that was free to do anything. freedom to ALL men, and ALL men could do with their life as they pleased. that was it. a way to be free to do anything, yet still have something to keep a law of the land.

So yes, it still freaking matters, obviously, lawyers have exploited the constitution into being able to do almost anything. I don't find that right, it's a guideline to do the right thing. But until you find me a large amount of people that this nation would trust in writing a new constitution for the greater good and not themselves, we're gonna stick with that piece of paper that says we are free.

Roberts just handed them a powerful new weapon, the court sanctioned right to tax citizens for not buy a product or service! Now they can put a tax into any bill have it declared Constitutional according to Roberts's ruling. And it doesnt even have to be a declared tax bill! How's that for tyranny? Boston tea be damned! It was chump change compared to this outrageous travesty of justice and attack on our freedoms!-Tyr

Congress has had the power of taxation since it's inception...it's not a new power granted to them by the recent SCOTUS decision. Future taxation is going to have political consequences and any future "fees or penalties" the libs might have been planning will be correctly called a tax and imposing them will be perilous.

Furthermore according to Roberts said bill doesnt even have to be VOTED ON as a tax bill! What consequences and how does that do us much good if the consequences take many years to correct the problem? The point being that striking down the unconstitutional law was the court's duty and Roberts failed to carry out that duty! Why do so many dismiss the 4 judges that wanted to rule according to the Constitution in favor of one jackass that sided with the leftist/socialist worthless judges?-Tyr

Can you post the Article and Clause from the constitution that makes a tax on a "product/service not purchased" un-constitutional? Mind you, I'm not saying I think it's right, I'm only asking you to justify un-constitutionality.

The recent SC ruling opens the door for Congress to tax anything, any activity, regardless if you engage in the activity or not

The Founding Fathers also intended that all wealthy men should stay wealthy. Women had no rights. Those of the wrong skin color, religious persuasion and ideology had no rights. The First Amendment forbid the establishment of any official church or religious viewpoint. They insisted that religion was a personal matter that states could not interfere with.
There is a thread on this forum that states that America was founded as a Christian nation, which could not be any further from the truth. America was founded as a free nation, not an equal one.

I was referring to their personal beliefs. There were founding fathers who opposed slavery, but owned slaves.

Figure I'll tackle this paragraph point-by-point. First off, black weren't not even counted as people in most slave-holding countries, period. We were the progressives of the world on that issue, so I don't see how it is that that's a mark against the Founders.

In most places in the world of the time, no one got to vote, period. Women here, however, could own property, putting us ahead, again, of most of the world of the time.

South Dakota does have the same number of Senators as California, though I don't see how the Founders had any say in that, since, well, neither was a part of the Union at the time. Oh right, we didn't own those yet.

The Electoral College. Of course they had the Electoral College back then. They'd didn't have the internet, phones, or even telegraphs, so how the fuck do you think they're getting the voting results together? It was the only way to make it a feasible plan.

You're right, there weren't income taxes, not until 1914... and? Income taxes have created a way to punish success, and reward mediocrity and failure. Not a step in the right direction.

As for Prohibition, yeah, pretty much everybody thought that sucked. End of story.

Yes, we should have a balanced budget amendment. You can't spend more than you earn, period.

It is as legal to ask illegal immigrants to carry ID while they are driving as it is to ask ordinary citizens to carry ID when they're driving.

Yes Gabby I am aware of the history of slavery and I am amazed how libs like yuo always want top live in the past and ignore the present

I am also you are aware we had a Civil War where over 600,000 people died ending slavery

In the 1960's it was Dems who led the fight to oppose equal rights for blacks Gabby.Without republican votes, the Equal Rights bill would not have passed.It was Dems who opposed the Equal Rights Bill. (in fact Al Gore Sr voted against it) It was Dems who flew the Confederate flag over southern state capitals. But I know you are not interested in any of these facts

Most of the modern day race baiters look for any hint of racism (real or not) but ignore the racism shown from the left toward black conservatives. The racial slurs leveled at Justice Thomas, Michael Steele, Herman Cain, Condi Rice, Thomas Sowell, just to name a few - have come from liberals who claim they want to erase all racism from America

Also it has become a habit for these people to play the race card regardless of the issue. For the last 4 years I doubt if a day has gone by without some liberal somewhere bellowing how racist Amercia is despite the election of Pres Obama. Even if you opposed raising the debt ceiling, it was because Pres Obama was a black man (at least according to a liberal bimbo in Congress)

Bottom line is Gabby, yes Amercia made mistakes as jas every other country has. But for some reason libs always want to trash America and not express how great the counttry really is
