I'd never liked the original song before I heard Madge's version. I have an appreciation for the original now, though, thanks to her.

Nobody can or ever will do the song American Pie better than Don McLean IMO..
Some songs just can not be topped by any other than the singer that made them a hit.
For example, 1. Willie Nelson's , Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain 2. Johnny Cash's , I Walk the Line , Big River, Sunday Morning Coming Down or 3. Merle Haggard's , Okie from Muskogee 4. Janis Joplins's , Me and Bobby McGee! I rest my case on those but there are others.
Nobody and I do mean NOBODY will ever do Willie's ,Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain , better than he!!!!!
Same for Joplin's, Me and Bobby McGee!
Cash's offering of , Sunday Morning Coming Down, gets me everytime even after 40 years now..-Tyr
