Mom slapped with bill to clean street after son killed by illegal immigrant drunk driver


GREENVILLE, SC – A grieving mother told a South Carolina court Tuesday she was slapped with several bills, including one to clean the street, after her son was killed by a drunk driver last year.

WYFF reports Loretta Robinson spoke of the emotional and financial toll her son Justin Walker's death had on her as the driver Anna Gonzales, who is an illegal immigrant, pled guilty in the case.

Robinson told the judge she has been unable to work due to the emotional impact of her son's death, and can't pay the bills she keeps receiving from the accident even though her son was not at fault."I had to pay to have the vehicle towed," she said according to WYFF. "I had to pay for the vehicle removed and to clean up the street from Justin's blood on the ground."

Robinson said the $50 bill to clean the street stung the most.

"First of all, having to open the mail and look at the charge to the deceased, Justin Darryl Walker -- the deceased! It's just a hard thing to deal with in the context of your child," she said according to WYFF.

Robinson says she doesn't expect to get any money from Gonzales. The state's victim assistance fund has provided some money, but it primarily covers funeral, medical and counseling expenses.

Gonzales, an illegal immigrant that didn't have a South Carolina driver's license, was sentenced to 17 years in prison.

why is she in court over a bill sent to her deceased son in the first place.....

I cannot imagine how hurtful that must be, to receive a bill like that. She should refuse to pay it - she shouldn't have to anyway! If anyone is to pay the bill, its the person who killed her son!

She was at sentencing for the illegal that killed her son and she was telling the court about the impact ... emotional and financial, that her son's death had on her. It was in the article.

I seriously doubt that $50, nor the fact that it was an illegal immigrant that killed him changed one iota the pain that poor woman is going through.

But it does seem odd that the victim would be billed for the cleanup. Seems kinda old school Russian when someone's family would get a bill for the bullet the state used to execute them.

That's one way to look at it. Was the car registered; do fuel surcharges cover road maintenance?

Side note, I carry uninsured motorist on my insurance for such things. Came in handy the time my wife was read ended by a guy who had blue cross insurance. :laugh: True story.

I've been hit twice by uninsured or underinsured motorists. Oddly , both times the driver was a good old boy American who simply felt he didn't have to follow the law.
