It's because our current progressive liberal culture promotes absolute free speech and no consequences. The bus monitor has no power to hand out consequences, thus the ignorant kids are in absolute power. Until we give power back to supervising adults this kind of behavior will grow exponentially.

I don't belive it is a 'current progressive liberal culture' problem...unless the non progressives are just using that as an excuse. That would only be true if you only saw 'progressives' act this way. Have you seen message board culture lately? It is everyone that is doing it...and unfortunately they are teaching this shit to their children.

Obama cut his teeth in Chicago politics. The dirtiest politics and dirtiest political machine ever in this nation(were Rahm Emanuel ran to!). Yet according to his fawning media , bamboy is as clean and pure as the wind driven snow! Bullshit!
They attacked and vilified a teenage girl and her child because they knew obama would turn a blind eye to it and they were correct on that. For they knew the man had no honor! And again they were correct! His having no honor is the problem and his doing the bidding of outside (foreign)interests(Soros) over that which is best for the health , security and economic prosperity of this nation has led us far down the road towards national destruction.
So, I did make the comparison and do say let's put real adults back in charge of our nation and not the boy wonder and his insane , corrupt crew of crying, whining socialist babies that aid him in destroying the Constitution and sinking us more trllions deeper into debt!-Tyr

Kids need boundaries, and need to be put back across them by adults when they violate those lines. The main problem is parents, on both sides of the line, who have fully bought into this idea that children are fragile little snowflakes who can't possibly take even the least amount of real discipline. This leaves folks like this monitor in a horrible position where they can be bullied, and guess what? Bullies know this, that's why they talk like this to this woman, because they know there won't be any real consequences for them.
Monitors cannot fire back, lay hands on any child on the bus (Yes, even if they're stabbing her), and the worst punishment that most school bus companies do is a short suspension, 2~3 days. That's about it. So basically, the government has enforced that there must be monitors on buses to keep kids in line, then systematically removed their ability to do just that.

Associated PressROCHESTER, N.Y. — A New York school bus monitor who was verbally assaulted by four middle schoolers, an attack that generated international outrage and an outpouring of support for the woman when a video of the taunts went viral, has told police she does not want the boys to face criminal charges.
The monitor, 68-year-old Karen Klein, told police she is happy with the swift and strong community response against the verbal attack aboard a Greece Central School District bus, which was captured in a 10-minute video, authorities said Thursday.
Criminally charging the boys, all seventh-graders, would require their conduct to rise to the level of a crime, Greece Police Capt. Steve Chatterton said. So far, it has not been found to reach that level...

Ok, I'll take out the word "liberal". You are right ... although there are plenty of parents who are defying the norm and handing down consequences to their children who participate in this behavior, it is a reflection of our society.
My beef is with the "progressive culture" taking away the ability to hand down consequences because it might "offend" someone, or "infringe" upon their rights.
When our culture has gotten so "crass" that a bus monitor doesn't report being abused like this because she knows "nothing will be done" .... is pathetic.

I agree. But isn't that what we are told? Just as an example...when I brought up new laws around cyberstalking/bullying in NM. first two replies back were that NM would never enforce them anyway so good luck....since they suck at enforcing their DWI laws. So, basically, the thought was...no one should bother or worry about it.
I agree these kids act this way because they know rules will not be enforced...and if they are they will be pretty mild in most cases. Probably a day or two of detention or at most suspension from school.

Yep, the fact that it hit youtube, then the video hit the media is what caused the controls to be put on the kids. While impossible to be certain given the circumstances, my guess is that the lady would have pressed charges if publicity hadn't come. I'm not saying they money, someone working all those years for $15k per year, isn't and wasn't in it for the money. However, without the pressure brought through youtube, she would have to do something to make the harassment stop.

It is interesting that some people seem to associate this behavior with the current occupant of the White House. I have seen this issue escalating over the past 30 years. I am sure my perception is a conservative estimate. I know where the problem originates. An example will illustrate. Many years ago, my mother's young male cousin began returning from school every day with complaints of leg pain. He never had a problem on weekends but only school days. On the day of the parent-teacher meeting, his mother went to meet with his teacher. Her son's academic performance was adequate, but not remarkable. Toward the end of the meeting she asked if the teacher knew of anything her son was doing that might overstrain his legs. The teacher shook her head and said that since he was behaving poorly just about every day, using bad language and teasing the other kids, she told him he was acting like trash and was going to be treated like trash. She then made him stand in the waste basket. That was when he got the spanking - from his mother - who was embarrassed that her son was aggravating Sister. The idea of providing consistent discipline between the schools and the parents has disappeared. KIDS HAVE NO JUDGEMENT! yet many parents allow them to do as they please without restraint and then shake their heads when they do things like this. They are allowing savages to grow up in our midst and expect them to somehow develop civilized manners at age 21. Foolish hope. These are the same kids who grow up to be the ill-mannered morons on the train with me in the afternoon, the ones in nice dresses and business suits who push past pregnant woman and the disabled, who hide in the rest room to avoid the fare and who curse at you when you ask them to tone down the cell phone conversation about their latest dirty business trick (all things I have seen in the past two weeks). This is not a political problem, it is a family problem.

Now I will say right now, that the one kid who kept flipping at her hair, I would have brought charges against. I don't touch the students, they must not touch me.
But I would like the ability to defend myself if the kid is physically assaulting me. We've had monitors here in NY who have been stabbed by their students, and get fired. Why? Because they grabbed the kid that was stabbing them and shoved them away. Yeah, apparently our monitors are horrible child abusers because they'd really rather not be stabbed.
I'm not even necessarily talking about physical responses, but at least untie the hands of the monitor, and give them the authority to do the job they are supposed to be doing. It's like making a cop, then telling them they can't arrest anyone, or carry/use a weapon of any kind. How much respect, exactly, are they going to get from the people they're supposed to be keeping in line?
I mean, as a teacher, you can give detentions, talk back to an extent, and and even move to have a child suspended or expelled for their behavior, to say nothing of the ability to effect their grades. The bitch of it at my school was that they would throw you on in-school suspension, and the baseline of it was 1 week. You had to sit in a small white-walled classroom in the basement that had no windows to look out of, and you could bring only the supplies necessary for your current schoolwork (which they would have a list of). Lunch would be brought in to you, and you would be escorted to your bus at the end of the day.

If more parents acted like you, we'd have much better schools. Instead, we tend to have screaming parents and lawsuits if their little darlings are disciplined in any way. And in my experience, the (public schools) District will cave every time.

Was just reading this article (unbelievable)...hey Kathianne... what does this remind you of?
Bullying of teachers more damaging in online era
MIAMI (http://www.bing.com/maps/?v=2&where1=MIAMI&sty=h&form=msdate) — The bullying that bus monitor Karen Klein endured on a ride home from an upstate New York school was painful and egregious, but also shows how student harassment of teachers and administrators has become more spiteful and damaging in the online era. Much attention has been paid to students who bully students in class, after school and on the Internet. Less has been given to equally disturbing behavior by students who harass instructors, principals and other adults.
It's something that's long existed; think ganging up on the substitute teacher. But it has become increasingly cruel and even dangerous as students get access to advanced technology at earlier ages.
In Maryland, students posed as their vice principal's twin 9-year-old daughters on pedophile websites, saying they had been having sex with their father and were looking for a new partner. Elsewhere, students have logged on to neo-Nazi and white supremacist sites claiming to be a Jewish or minority teacher and inciting the groups' anger. Others have stolen photographs from teachers' cellphones and posted them online.

How many times have people said things they don't mean? Do people not understand that they can't take everything literally? If someone said 'We should bomb the crap out of Iran', do they really mean it, or are they just voicing their frustration and anger?
But besides that...
The donations to this woman has passed six hundred thousand dollars. It was fifty thousand less when I checked last night. At the end of the next 27 days, she'll be a millionaire, I bet. That's some pretty cool stuff. People do care about things like this. Bullying affects not only the victim, but also the people around them, and that is shown by the generosity shown by so many.

Good then I don't want to hear any more whining and bellyaching when the main snarkers...become the snarkees. :thumb:
Calling out dumb comments =/= snark.
Not sure why you care about such a little comment? I don't think we need to worry about every stray comment in a thread.
And after all, we do have a Presidential election a few months, and many people are very concerned about the outcome.
Because It looks poorly on the board IMO. So a bullied bus monitor is directly related to the election?

Shall I get buckled in for three pages of snark definition?

to be followed by 3 pages of complaining only when certain people do it no doubt.

Most of this week. I have been reading about Snarks, and Fires here on the forums about certain members.
Would someone kindly explain who, and how anyone FLAMES, or SNARKES other members with such expertise?
And, does being capable of either make someone special...other than to themselves?
By the way. Those who claim to be Semantics experts are nothing but Rhetorical Phonies!

We should just wait until FJ releases the memo on that I think. Wouldn't want him to have to correct us or anything.

Where did I say it was directly related? You are better than that, fj. :salute:
I disagree that it reflects poorly on the board. It is one small comment. And one that likely would have gone unnoticed if you had not put a spotlight on it.

We can agree to disagree on that but it's not one small comment. Why does the election even need to come up in this thread?

It's acceptable and in fact encouraged to blame EVERYTHING on Obama no matter how tangential the connection.

How is it not one small comment?
People can pretty much comment as they wish here. Everyone has their style, and very few people stay strictly on point. We generally do not police comments here. Especially to that extent.
You can feel free to ignore a sentence any time in any thread. Ironically, this thread has been far more disrupted by your complaint about the sentence, than by the sentence itself.

This whole thing sounds suspicious to me.
First of all, is this the first time that the bullying has occurred? If so, strange that it would happened to be filmed and posted on the internet.
Sorry to be questioning, but it seems like a set up to me.
ALSO...
Does there have to be an Obama reference in EVERY dang thread on this forum? Is it really that serious to people? (Besides the racists, of course :p )

I think that's unfair. CH posted a reasonably smartass remark that pointed out an obviously misplaced statement. Maybe chick does eat too many twinkies; doesn't make it ok to taunt. Lots o smilies doesn't make it funny IMHO.

I find it dispicable. In a country where one can be anything he or she wishes and works for it, we have allowed people to be treated as turds to be stepped on. Heck even an animal is allowed to fight back spitting, hissing or biting. It's like giving someone the power to do something and then taking away their tools to do it.
And you can't tell me the parents of those kids haven't seen or heard their child displaying such actions before. What the heck goes on in someones home that makes a child want to cause pain by bullying others? It boggles the mind. Too bad in America those kids can't get a belt or board used on their precious little backsides. Maybe then they'd show some respect to others. Sickening.

This sounds like the perfect thread, when discussing poor parents who pretend they know nothing about how their children Bully others...that we should combine this with "DO YOU SUPPORT TORTURE"...Waterboard the parents of those children. TWO PROBLEMS solved.
