Rush Limbaugh (http://www.politico.com/tag/rushlimbaugh) has drawn the ire of celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred (http://www.politico.com/tag/gloriaallred), who sent a letter to the Palm Beach County state attorney requesting an investigation into whether the popular radio host should be prosecuted for calling a law student a “slut” (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0312/73487.html) and “prostitute” last week.
“Mr. Limbaugh targeted his attack on a young law student who was simply exercised her free speech and her right to testify before congress on a very important issue to millions of American women and he vilified her. He defamed her and engaged in unwarranted, tasteless and exceptionally damaging attacks on her,” Allred told POLITICO Friday afternoon. “He needs to face the consequences of his conduct in every way that is meaningful.”

I don't think that statute would pass constitutional muster.

I would hope not! Apparently, media attention and money are more important to Allred than free speech. She is off the wall.

Are you kidding me... that'd be great. Perhaps with Bill Maher enjoined as a defendant with joint representation by the ACLU defending free speech-- I'd love to see those guys on the same side of an issue for once.

This woman is a full blown idiot. I read several celebrity websites daily and she's a staple on them. Not necessarily because all of her clients are famous, but in part because SHE wants to be famous. This lady is an attention whore. I wish she would be sanctioned by the courts for filing frivolous lawsuits.

I think she will have trouble finding any support on this. Miss Fluke hasn't even asked her for her services and still she is running her mouth.

It's not just Gloria Allred...even though she is a total nutjob too. I was reading an atricle earlier about an orgainization trying to get the FCC to take Rush off the air called Woman's Media Center...co founder's three more activist loons...suprise suprise...Jane Fonda.Gloria Steinum and Robin Morgan. Here is their statement on the matter.
"This isn't political. While we disagree with Limbaugh's politics, what's at stake is the fallout of a society tolerating toxic, hate-inciting speech. For 20 years, Limbaugh has hidden behind the First Amendment, or else claimed he's really "doing humor" or "entertainment." He is indeed constitutionally entitled to his opinions, but he is not constitutionally entitled to the people's airways.
It's time for the public to take back our broadcast resources. Limbaugh has had decades to fix his show. Now it's up to us."
I have a feeling censorship is going to be the next item in line for the Obama Administration.

If this bullsh*t isn't a reason for people to vote R then I don't know what it would take. Are they calling for Bill Maher's head? The fallout of society?!!! Do they watch MSNBC and hear the venom that comes out of that station?!!
I was reading around on DU today and almost every response to this story said that they hate Rush, but even they think he has the right to free speech.

I doubt they really care about the alleged hate speech...that is just the vehicle they are using at the moment because it is convenient. I think the objective is to just get Rush off of the air period, because he is effective...and they can't stand that. Just another back door to censorship of people they don't agree with and don't like politically.

Effective at what, exactly? I would say he's an entertainer first, pundit second. His primary agenda is getting people to tune in; while getting listeners to agree or buy into whatever it is he's talking about plays second fiddle. The fact so many tune in is frustrating for those who compete for market share; which is true for liberals and conservatives alike-- its just business. To assume anything else is naive, IMO.

His agenda of pointing out the absurd in the liberal agenda...by being absurd. That's what is hated...the fact that he is an effective counter argument to their cause. And the fact that he makes millions doing it, probably burns their ass too.

Arguably I guess; based on the premise of fighting absurdity with absurdity to garner a number of listeners, making million$-- while resolving nothing-- concludes just how many in our society have become despondent. Which carries with it lesson, but hardly one worthy of praise. Pundits are to politics what water is to a grease fire.

I see pundits more as Carnys. Making easy bucks off the side shows hoping to get lucky by somehow having influence that actually makes a difference. Capitalism is a bitch--ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

Can't believe that woman is actually an attorney. More evidence that people graduate law school without learning a thing.
“speaks of and concerning any woman, married or unmarried, falsely and maliciously imputing to her a want of chastity”
Let's say for the sake of argument that prosecuter did charge Rush with this. And let's also say for the sake of argument that it stands up to First Amendment muster. Which any lawyer worth his pay would have it struck down due to that immediately. Does anyone really think that the prosecutor can:
1) Prove that the allegation is false. How do you prove someone is not a slut? The word is by definition incredibly subjective. A slut by definition is "a promiscuous woman". How many partners do you need to be promiscuous?
2) That the statements were malicious. Malicously is a very high legal standard. Very difficult to prove in defamation or criminally.
3) That they can prove that Ms Fluke is chaste. the definition of chaste is:
1
: innocent of unlawful sexual intercourse
2
: celibate (http://www.debatepolicy.com/celibate)
3
: pure in thought and act
She admittedly has had sexual partners. She is sure not celibate if she has a current partner. And does anyone honestly believe that this woman is pure?
There is no way on earth that any honest person could claim that he can impute her self-admitted non-existing chastity. All the defense would have to do is call a single one of her former lovers to the stand and the prosecution has lost the case. Heck, they could probably just ask her if she's ever been sexually active and if she is being honest, they would lose the case.
This is a blatant attempt to try to silence Rush.

^more blatant than being an attention whore?
**disclaimer**
the use of whore is in no way meant to impute the character of Ms Allred in a sexually manner; rather as a euphemism for one who seeks to gain visibility by pandering to a public audience:lol:
