Key points in this Outlook:


Grades awarded in university education departments are consistently higher than grades in other disciplines.

While some teachers are very bright, unfortunately most aren't. That doesn't mean they won't be great teachers, as long as the have the minimum knowledge for what they are teaching. From my experience those with 'education degrees' as majors typically are not very strong in academics.

Quite frankly, most teachers are teachers because it's almost impossible NOT to earn a degree and once you have a job, you're almost set as long as you don't do anything stupid.


Seriously go into a college sometime and see who's earning the bachelors in education. It's not the go getters. Sad, but true.


Even sadder, it could be fixed so easily. First get rid of the whole stupid education degree to begin with (for high school, middle and primary school I would leave alone) and just tell all college students that if they will teach in their field at a public school for four years in the state where they went to college that their college will be paid for. You would then see premed students down teaching biology at the local high school, etc etc.

I was lucky. I grew up in a rich town in Connecticut (although we were relatively poor). Great public high school. I had several teachers with Phds, one (the resident socialist) from Harvard. These teachers were maniacal in how they inspired students to learn. It was anything but rote learning. Most kids don't get that kind of inspiration.

I do wish I did more with it, though.

In fact, there's something to be said for teachers that found some difficulties in learning; as they had to try different ways to gain the knowledge they successfully accomplished. Sometimes the 'brilliant' have trouble with students that don't catch on, often offering no alternative ways to master the material.

I agree. I'm not brilliant by any means, but I have to say I taught to the smart kids as a teaching assistant in grad school. I really just "get" how a kid couldn't understand the material. I just thought it was so basic (economics).
