HOUSTON (AP) -- Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani today urged conservatives to look past his support for abortion rights, arguing that his divergence on the issue should not disqualify him from being the party's GOP nominee.

The former New York City mayor has struggled in the last week to explain his personal opposition to terminating pregnancies with his long record of favoring a woman's right to choose. He has defended his positions — and some say contradictory comments — on late-term abortion, public funding for abortions and the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion.

"Everybody's got to make a choice," Giuliani told about 500 students, faculty and staff crammed into an auditorium at Houston Baptist University. "How important are the differences and how important are the other issues we may agree on."

Giuliani emphasized his conservative credentials on tax cuts, crime and the war in Iraq before clarifying his support for abortion, a position he acknowledged was unlikely to be shared by those listening.

Describing his belief that abortion was "morally wrong," Giuliani said he has opposed it all his life. But he said he believes the decision should ultimately be left to individuals and that their decisions should be respected.

"In a country like ours ... I believe you have to respect their viewpoint and give them a level of choice. I would grant women the right to make that choice," he said.

Several students praised Giuliani's speech, but said it was unlikely to make them support his candidacy.

Why on hell would anyone respect a decision that they themselves consider "morally wrong"?

Porn may be "morally wrong", but should still be allowed.

May not be completely analogous to abortion, but it does answer the question...

Just because it should be allowed doesn't mean people have to "respect it".

People have a right not to respect things too.

Of course. But the discussion was about Giuliani's stance on abortion, in the context of a potential Presidential candidate. I assume that "respect" in this case would mean, "allowing them to make their own decision" under the law.

Atleast he is remaining consistant. I think it takes quite a bit of backbone not to just change his position even though he knows his constiuents oppose him.

With that said, im not planning to vote for him.

Your not gonna vote for him? What a loss, go vote for your little buddies Clinton and Osama.

Yup. But everybody knew this going in. Why is everyone so surprized now? He's toast. He's done. He will NEVER get the nomination.

There are plenty better candidates on the Repub side than Rudy, he's a social fucking nutter.

I'm liking Romney but its early, no way does Rudy or Mc Cain get my vote, i'll go to the constitution party before I vote for either of those two douchebags.

I wouldnt mind seeing Guiliani in the next administration in some capacity. But I agree. The social aspects will keep him from getting the nomination.

Id rather have Rudy than Hillary.

But then thats what I like about the Republicans. Other than Paul and Maybe T. Tompson, we have some good candidates running. They may not be perfect on all the issues, but they are still far better qualified than anyone on the Democrat side.

Well i've always said that i'd vote for Charles Manson before I voted for any Democrat.

Hopefully Rudy and McCain get weeded out in the primaries.

Would like to see the Law And Order guy run, he seems like an old fashioned kick ass take names later type. Can't think of his name right now, Fred Thompson?:laugh2: NO IDEA!
