Yes, I am a liberal, and I believe individuals should have a wide variety of choices on what to do and not to do. But I believe this is a wrong decision:

Kinda sad but it's unconstitutional to compel anyone to recite the pledge of allegiance, much less stand for it.

Schools here encourage all to remain quiet during the 'moment of silence' and stand for the pledge. Compel? No way. It's common courtesy to stand for the pledge or the anthem of any country, but like allowing flag or book burning, one has the right to prove they're an ass.

Pretty soon the ACLU will determine that it infringes upon a child's right to require them to attend school.

I know about individual rights and all, but I believe younger people should be taught to respect our flag as a symbol of our country.

Kids that don't stand for the pledge were probably told not to by their parents. Schools encourage respect of the flag, most elementary students will do so due to peer pressure, even if encouraged not to. In HS kids may be under parental influence or think that copying the 60's is way cool.

Again, to encourage respect is something schools should do. They should not compel.

I couldn't agree more Kath, govts way of compelling certain behavior can have far worse results. So far as HS kids and what they think is cool-- I'll bet they think the latest iPhone is cooler than the sixties-- look at the compelling behavior of the govt where iPhones source from--- not quite so cool IMO.
