Is Gov. Scott Walker's offer enough for a deal with rogue 'Wisconsin 14'?

Governor Walker has released emails with some of the absentee 'Wisconsin 14' that show he's willing to compromise – on some issues, to some extent.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has said for weeks that he’s not willing to budge on the parts of his budget bill that would strip most Badger State public unions of their collective bargaining power. But now it turns out that’s not entirely true – he is willing to compromise, after all. Is he giving up enough so that Wisconsin’s union standoff can be settled via a deal?

Let’s examine possible answers to that question by going to the emails (pdf).

First, a little background. On Tuesday, Governor Walker released to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel a chain of emails that show he’s offered to dial back a bit on his anti-union efforts. The emails were sent to some of the “Wisconsin 14” – the Democratic state senators who have fled to Illinois to block a vote on this whole thing.

Among key changes, Walker’s offer would allow public unions to bargain over salaries with no dollar limit. In his budget bill, he had banned negotiations over anything but increases that keep up with inflation.

Walker also says that he’d let unions continue to bargain over mandatory overtime, performance bonuses, hazardous duty pay, and classroom size for teachers, among other things.

Only one of the Wisconsin 14 has to return for the state Senate to muster a quorum and return to work. And several of the rogue Democrats say that Walker's offer is enough to keep them talking – though it’s not enough yet to get them to give up the dubious comfort of a hotel bed in Illinois...

Kinda like the "back off or the nigger dies" routine from Blazing Saddles. They have taken themselves hostage and everyone stands there in amazement.

That's for sure, holding a knife to their own throat isn't going to work any more. I really want to see the dems lose this real bad. Then see proceedings started to remove them from office.

Now that's an interesting statement.

What are the chances that Gov. Walker released a few carefully-fabricated emails he wrote out a few days ago, or maybe some genuine ones from a year or so ago? The Dems tell each other, "Well, looks like he's caving, we won, let's go back home".....

.....and when they arrive at the Wisconsin capitol, they find he's adamant and not compromising an inch, and now they are surrounded by Wisconsin state troopers who prevent them from leaving again. And the Republicans then hold the votes they've been waiting for, and pass each one by majority vote since a quorum is now present.

Any more devious than Democrats fleeing their own state, abandoning their jobs, and deliberately disrupting the voting process?

Yep. All dated and I'm certain they can be authenticated, otherwise he's in a heap of trouble.

Not really. It's the same things he's been saying, they just haven't been listening. It's so much easier to scream that 'he's taking away all our rights. He's for destruction of the middle class.' Not going to work anymore.

If getting beaten by the Republicans and Gov Walker, the union had to take another defeat as well

The Milwaukee teachers union has reportedly dropped a lawsuit against the Milwaukee Board of School Directors and the state labor commission. The end result: Viagra will no longer be covered in teachers’ health insurance plans.

The battle over teachers’ Viagra can only be described as long and hard. Now here’s the thrust of it.

In 2002, union demands got a lift, and erectile dysfunction medication was added to the teachers’ benefit package. But when negotiations opened for the 2003-to-2005 contract the school board lowered the boom. Citing rising costs, they tried to withdraw Viagra. The matter went to arbitration – and the school board raised the victory flag. But in July 2010, the union was so hard-up they filed suit to force the state to cover Viagra, claiming discrimination – because female sexual dysfunction meds were covered. The board argued that Viagra and similar drugs for males were mainly recreational.

Now unexpectedly the teachers union went limp and out-of-the-blue, ended the lawsuit. This is a downer for liberals. If taxpayers won’t be forced to pay for Viagra how will Milwaukee educators keep up with the physical rigors expected of them? They’re already feeling screwed by the new Governor, who’s trying to make them pay a portion of their own health care and pension plans – and now this. Poor fellas! They’re going to have to dig in their own pockets to come up with cash to make other things in their pockets come up.

What a comeuppance! Sometimes life can be a cruel letdown, can't it.

The Milwaukee teachers union has dropped a lawsuit seeking to get its taxpayer-funded Viagra back.

The union sued in July 2010 to force the school board to again include the erectile dysfunction drug and similar pills in its health insurance plans.

The union has argued the board's policy of excluding such drugs from the plans discriminates against male employees; the board has countered the 2005 move was meant to save money.

Court records indicate attorneys for the union, the school board and the state Labor and Industry Review Commission agreed to dismiss the lawsuit on March 1. Messages for all three groups' attorneys weren't immediately returned.

^Wow, from bad to worse.

Maybe they dropped the suit because they'll get it back under BOcare.

compromise is inherently lose-lose. Leaders dont need to, and often shouldn't compromise when they are right :)
