President Obama tonight repeated a claim about his job-destroying budget that has already been discredited by independent voices as “not close to being true” and “literally not true.” Here’s what the president said during a one-on-one interview (http://www.wcpo.com/dpp/news/political/exclusive:-obama-sits-down-with-9-news) with WCPO-TV Cincinnati’s Carol Williams: “My budget freezes spending for five years, and what that does is it solves the short-term problem by saying, we’re not going to spend any more money than we’re taking in.”
Here’s a fact: in every year of the President’s budget, the federal government would spend more than it takes in. It’s all laid out in the White House’s own budget tables (http://www.speaker.gov/UploadedFiles/budget-truth.pdf):

“At no point in the president’s 10-year projection would the U.S. government spend less than it’s taking in,” ABC News reported (http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2011/02/president-obamas-budget-and-the-pending-budget-fight.html) the day the budget came out. After the president made a similar claim in his news conference earlier this week, FactCheck.org evaluated (http://factcheck.org/2011/02/budget-spin/) the claim as “not close to being true, even assuming that the president’s budget is enacted exactly as proposed and all economic assumptions turn out to be accurate.” One budget expert, Robert Bixby of the non-partisan Concord Coalition, told McClatchy (http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2011/02/15/108796/obama-says-hed-stop-adding-to.html#ixzz1E9AeAlCk), “It’s loose rhetoric. It’s literally not true.”

How about we simply start with a zero-based budget and work from there? Some things may justify an increase and some things will certainly justify a decrease or outright cut. Geithner admitted that the budget submitted is "unsustainable," the question should then have been asked, "Why hasn't the administration then submitted a "sustainable" budget." It shouldn't be this hard.
