View Full Version : Do you feel Pornography hurts or helps Culture?
Just wondering your opinions...
If it is destructive why do you support it as "free speech"?
If you feel it's helpful, how?

I feel it hurts individuals because it gives a perverse ideas about what good sex is. I feel it hurts society because, when widespread, it makes these perverse ideas seem normal or something to which one should aspire.

The trouble with the term pornography is that we all have different ideas about what it means. What you deem as pornographic may be a world apart to mine, I am against censorship in principle but I do have what I would describe as the 'normal' boundaries as far as freedom of expression is concerned.
Some people will never experience sex, good or bad, pornography is an outlet.Aspirations to act out what they see is a matter for doctors and could be said about any form of stimulation.

Thank you for that highly informative link. I really got in touch with myself, after reading such sensitive passages as ...
"The male animal is not a piece of meat," Roehnert explained. "He is a rose wrapped in a poem, yielding up his deepest, most intimate secrets only when just the right magical moment has been achieved. The alluring yet fragile petals of the delicate flower known as the male of the species can unfold and bloom only in the presence of the right combination of gentleness, tenderness and deep, abiding care."

The next time I hear anybody refer to the male as a delicate flower, I'm punching her in the ovaries, because anybody who says that can't possibly have balls.

God was the first pornographer.
He created Adam and Eve naked and left them to live naked in the garden.
They sinned, screwing up a good gig.
God came looking for them and Adam was hiding.
God said "why are you hiding", "who told you you were naked".
Gen 2: 25: And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
Gen 3:8: And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
9: And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
10: And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
11: And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked?
Which pretty much shows you how cavalier God was about his naked human creations.
Why are you ashamed of God's creation?

It is based on the fact that sex is not just about physical pleasure, but also about emotional bonding. Porn downplays or entirely leaves out that aspect of sex.

I wouldn't classify nude sculpture or paintings as pornography right off the bat. There's nothing wrong with appreciating the human body in its variations. For me the line is drawn when the intent of such works is to directly elicit a sexual response. IMO there is a fine line between erotic art and pornography, and it's a line which varies with the individual and community. As Justice Stewart said on the topic, "I know it when I see it."
I think the Lockhart Commission had it right when they determined that only specific depictions should be ruled as criminal acts. The Meese Commission went too far by trying to ban depiction of acts which were NOT criminal when conducted between consenting adults in private. We've had a number of significant court cases (including some before SCOTUS) related to the issue of free speech and pornography/obscenity. I personally liked the Ashcroft vs. ACLU (2004) ruling which declared the Child Online Protection Act to be a violation of Constitutional free speech (jsut as the Communications Decency Act earlier).

A guy saying he's going to get a woman naked and then ripping off part of her shirt to reveal a bare boob... I think that crosses the line, if only slightly, into porn.
Edit: For the record, the FCC went overboard, which is yet another reason I think the FCC needs to have its power reduced. Given the nature of football games and the outrage from the public, I don't think that has another chance of happening for a loooooooooooooooong time, fines or not.

Because it depicts women as nothing more than a sex object, and all the more you have to do to get in their pants is say "hi". If that's the way women want to be seen, as an easy, cheap, piece of meat, then there's nothing wrong. If they don't want to be seen that way, then there's the problem with it.
But you hit on it shattered. It's all about "money".

You hit on one of the reasons why the sex industry in general is bad. Many women are hooked on drugs by people making porn (or, in the case of hookers, by their pimps), and given the drugs they need to keep their habit after they 'perform.' Some women answer ads for jobs, only to find the only job that was was ever available was for porn/prostitution. Some women are just plain kidnapped.

I think porn objectifies women, sets false standards of beauty and desirability, and desensitises men to the beauty of the female body. I also think it's quite a hair to split to outlaw prostitution, but not pornography. Both are being paid to have sex. I really don't see the difference, and either way it swings (either both legal or neither legal), I'd at least like to see some consistency.

Women's whole existence is objectified. Why do you think they wear make-up and shave their bodies so as to give the impression of youth and virginity? Why do you think the color for females is pink and not say, green for example? Why do you think they paint their nails, wear sparkly things on their necks, ears, fingers and hair? Hell, the act of sex itself objectifies women. It puts them in the receiving, submissive end of the deal.
Also, both the men and the women get paid for pornography. Prostitution is a one-sided deal. Only the prostitute gets paid. That's the difference, since you asked.

We had a hidden "adult" section at USMB, yes. Honestly, I didn't participate much, as it was a way of keeping that stuff away from those who didn't care for it. So while I can verify I had the adult section, I can't comment on any pictures that may have been there.

Yes we did have an "adult" section at USMB, of which my "participation" was very limited, and from what I remember of it, even "hard core", which is what I consider porn, was not allowed. I'll repeat, I see nothing wrong with a "tasteful" nude picture of a woman. She isn't being ravaged by some junk yard dog in some filthy sex flick.
I do recall Jimmy telling a couple girls to stop posting pictures of huge, gross, fat women in there, because THAT was over the top.
If I posted a picture of some woman with a pierced whatever, I don't remember it. I "HATE" pierced things on women, and I wouldn't look twice at one that was, so honestly, I can't imagine me posting that sort of pic. Perhaps Mm has me confused with someone else.

It makes the women in the *movies* seen as a sex object - it doesn't make me be seen as a sex object, because I won't accept it. However, were I to put myself in one of those movies, then I guess I'd be getting what I'm asking for, no?

It's about how the men that watch these flicks perceive and then in turn treat women. They go down to the local bar, get half a gut full of beer, and use some cheesy line a girl and she's going to BEG him to SCREW her, when probably nothing could be further from the truth. I'd call these IDIOTIC "girls gone wild" vidoes about as pornagraphic as anything out there, and they way the girls are depicted in those is downright disgusting. They all look stupid, easy and slutty. But again, the level of intelligence of some of the guys watching that crap is that ALL college girls are like that, and they TREAT them that way then.
It's just bad I think. Bad for decent women.

I'm sorry, but I have to say this.
Pornography is wrong. It's morally bankrupt. It corrupts men, hurts women, damages children, destoys society. I'm all for free speech, but two people having sex isn't speech. Plus its destroying our society by undermining the role of traditional marriage.
I think that's what it's really all about. Liberals just hate traditional values so they're attacking the basis of it all, marriage. First they want to legalize porn everywhere, then they make it easier for people to get divorced, they allow abortions so kids don't have to face up to their responsibilites, now they want to let the queers marry. What's next? Polygamy? Bestiality? Sometimes we have to draw the line.

I'd say not. I don't think there is degrees of porn. It's either porn or it's not, and I wouldn't say a picture of a girl that's clothed, even scantily, was porn. Porn to me is anything depicting having sex. Pictures, movies, live shows, etc..

Ok, then what about the people getting busted with pics of small children that are half clothed? That's considered child porn regardless of whether there is sex involved or not, to my understanding, and rightfully so... That most definitely falls under my definition of sick and twisted.

I can't imagine a world without the freedom for some to, without victimizing others as in child porn, create what others might find "morally reprehensible". So long as all participants are of age to make decisions for themselves, and are willing participants, I can see no reason to limit the actions of others.
I'd hate for the majority to suddenly find, oh let's say hunting, something that I do as morally reprehensible and thus subject a constitutional right to the trash-heap for their own morality judgement.
This would be one of those times where somebody might be giving up freedom for security...

Agreed 100%.
I don't agree with hunting in the least (therefore, I don't do it), as there are more than enough animals bred strictly for food purposes. HOWEVER, if you're going to kill only what you'll actually eat, and eat what you kill, you're being responsible about it. Have at it.
