Just want everyone to know that I've brought 2 people over from the dark side this year. My daughter and best friend are no longer Democrats and it's BS like this that helped me.

Dem Candidate to Veteran: Military Service Isn't Public Service (http://politics.blogs.foxnews.com/2010/10/22/dem-candidate-veteran-military-service-isnt-public-service)

Twenty-four years in the military doesn't count as public service, at least according to Virginia Democratic Congressman Jim Moran.

In a video that's gone viral online, Moran is heard telling a Democratic gathering earlier this month that his opponent, Republican Patrick Murray, is just another unqualified GOP candidate.

"What [Republicans] do is find candidates, usually stealth candidates, that haven't been in office, haven't served or performed in any kind of public service," Moran said. "My opponent is typical, frankly."

The trouble is, Murray is a retired Army colonel with 24 years of service--including combat in Iraq. The idea that such an extensive military record doesn't qualify as "public service" has left a sour taste in Murray's mouth.
"It is unconscionable to me how a member of Congress from a District with so many Veterans, who also sits on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, could make such shameful and offensive comments about the sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform," Murray wrote on his (http://politics.blogs.foxnews.com/2010/10/22/dem-candidate-veteran-military-service-isnt-public-service)campaign blog (http://murray4congress.com/2010/10/22/jim-moran-no-respect-for-military-service/) Friday."This kind of disrespect to our service members not only offends me, but is insensitive to the sacrifices made by our dedicated military families as well." Moran responded Friday, telling local news outlet WJLA that he simply misspoke, and his constituents know that's not what he meant. The Murray campaign points out that the congressman had the same sort of explaining to do earlier this month, when he claimed an endorsement from the Disabled American Veterans Association and a high rating from the Military Officer's Association. The latter organization (http://politics.blogs.foxnews.com/2010/10/22/dem-candidate-veteran-military-service-isnt-public-service)reportedly (http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/blogs/beltway-confidential/rep-moran-serving-in-the-military-isnt-public-service-105460193.html#ixzz136bx56nT) asked Moran to cease using its name in support of his campaign efforts. The military community is not known for making political rebuffs; it was relatively quiet when Connecticut Senate candidate
(http://politics.blogs.foxnews.com/2010/10/22/dem-candidate-veteran-military-service-isnt-public-service)Richard Blumenthal (http://www.foxnews.com/topics/politics/richard-blumenthal.htm#r_src=ramp) (D) was revealed to have exaggerated (http://politics.blogs.foxnews.com/2010/10/22/dem-candidate-veteran-military-service-isnt-public-service)his service in Vietnam (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/05/18/connecticuts-blumenthal-confronted-false-claims-vietnam-war-service/). But in a district that is home to hundreds of military families from surrounding bases--and the Pentagon--Moran's remarks may evince a rebuttal in a form much sharper than words on Election Day: votes (http://politics.blogs.foxnews.com/2010/10/22/dem-candidate-veteran-military-service-isnt-public-service)

That man is the epitome of elitism. That's what our congress thinks. That they alone are serving the country by ruling it. And anyone else is just scum.If they have been there more than ten years they need to go home.

I watched the video yesterday and immediately thought of Foster Brooks. Anyone else see a bit of inebriation in his presentation.

I think the guy misspoke. I think what he meant was 'political service' -this seems like a non-story I suppose...He was caught talking out of his ass for a minute, without thinking.

Thing is - somebody with NO political experience is a GOOD thing nowadays.

But if one doesn't think field grade officers don't have "political" experience? Come on ....... that's pretty much 90% of the job description.

No, it's 10% of the job. Majors can get by just fine w/o much politics. LTCs can get by too - in fact, LTC's who aren't too political can get passed over for COL. Even still, I know personally several COLs who are AMAZINGLY effective leaders and HATE the political bullshit.

I work at that level in a civilian capacity. I interact with Field grades frequently - not a lot here currently, but in previous positions - and I can tell you, to a man or woman, they got where they are because they can LEAD Soldiers.

Agree with you 100% on this one Pagan.....my husband's career for the last seven years has been nothing but politics.

The kind of politics I'm talking about are the typical office politics .... and learning to be dipolmatic in order to get things accomplished. It seems that hubby's job has been trying to get major changes implemented into his area and he's spent a lot of time in DC getting the national level to change major policies. He's been out on the road "politicking" to get things through the system and the governmental bureaucracy ... and instead of sitting at his desk waiting for the paperwork to move through, he's the type to find out who the players at the senior levels are, he meets them, some some bonding, and has actually gotten things accomplished in a short of amount of time compared to his predecessors.

So, I believe he's been doing a lot of politicking .....but he's too honest to be a politician.

Anyway O's deal with politic's but once they hit field grade that's pretty much most of the the job.

Office politics, as MSKP described - sure. That's about it though. The only other politics they deal with comes from their bosses - CIVILIAN politicians ;)

When I was a young enlisted Soldier I thought the same, nearly the same, as you Pagan, about Officers. Now I see differently, or maybe just drank the Kool-Aide?
