Arizona Clears Strict Immigration Bill

I love it except now all the AZ illegals will just come to California.

Arizona lawmakers on Tuesday passed one of the toughest pieces of immigration-enforcement legislation in the country, which would make it a violation of state law to be in the U.S. without proper documentation.

It would also grant police the power to stop and verify the immigration status of anyone they suspect of being illegal.

I had to look it up to double check but yah... that is asking for papers. dag. maybe we should stop giving the drivers licenses. that might help to an extent. Then take them in, get a 'warrent' to see if they are here legally and then go from there.


but i will say that is a scary senario to be setting up... but the voice in my head says that someone has to do it... is just going unchecked and forgiven. look at the rest of America and how it acts since most people don't realize/acknolwedge that there are consequences.

Arizona’s SB1070 has just passed muster in the AZ house legislature, now waiting for either reconciliation with the AZ Senate or Governor Jan Brewer’s signature, which she is expected to sign.

This legislation effectively allows and indemnifies all law enforcement officers in the State of AZ to enforce Federal immigration laws when they come into contact with suspected illegal aliens. It also creates numerous new State laws to re-enable law enforcement to effectively get illegal aliens deported, after the Obama administration stripped that power from all law enforcement in the Nation last year, in what was seen as clear support of LaRaza’s goal for legalization of all illegal aliens via an in-the-works amnesty program.

Simple violation of most of the new State laws are a misdemeanor, which is sufficient to detain, process and put an immigration hold for transfer to Customs and Border Patrol. Should the illegal alien posses a deadly weapon or felony drug, the crime becomes a felony, which may or may not interest the County DA, but will insure that DHS lists them as a Criminal Illegal Aliens for deportation purposes and future criminal enhancement charges. The new State law also has a laundry list of violations for both smuggling, hiring and accepting employment.

You might consider selling your Home Depot stock now, because if these laws make it to the street for enforcement, there will no longer be packs of illegal aliens outside on the sidewalk looking to help homeowners and contractors with their cheep labor needs. On the plus side however, you teenage kids might stand a chance of getting a summer job in landscaping and construction, such as this author had the chance to do back in the 70’s, before Mexico’s invasion via demographics got a solid foothold.

Given the high profile of the players involved here, Such as Sheriff Joe Arpaio, LaRaza, Obama and Napolitano, expect Lawsuits at the federal level, with the support of the Obama Administration and the Latino Trial Lawyers Association, to immediately hit the news after SB1070’s passage. It's about time someone stands up and enforces the immigration laws. Good for Sheriff Joe.

This doesn't have to be about racial profiling, have checkpoints, we already have them for drunk driving and there is nothing unconstitutional about them. Stop everyone, if you're legal you have no bitch other than it takes time out of your day.

Aaaaahhhh........that old nasty thing of racial profiling....As far as I'm concerned, if ya have a crime committed that has been the norm of a particular group of people, then maybe it's wise to look within that group to find the answer, rather than wasting time, money and effort to question those that don't fit that particular profile.....

This shouldn't even be a problem... People should just sthu and let the cops profile whomever they think should be profiled. The wheels of progress would move so much faster. And they would be able to move onto other crimes that much quicker.....

Arizona Immigration Policy
(CNN) -- The Arizona state Senate on Monday passed an extensive immigration bill that is widely considered to be some of the toughest immigration legislation in the nation, requiring police officers to determine whether a person is in the United States legally.

Currently, officers can only take that route if a person is suspected in another crime. Critics, including immigrant advocates and the ACLU of Arizona, are concerned the new law will foster racial profiling, arguing that most police officers don't have enough training to look past race while investigating a person's legal status.

The Senate passed the bill in a 17-11 vote Monday. The bill was approved in a House vote last week and awaits the signature of Gov. Jan Brewer. Supporters of the measure expect her to sign it.

Republican state Sen. Russell Pearce, who wrote the bill, said in a recent interview that, with the bill, "We're going to take the handcuffs off of law enforcement, we're going to put them on the bad guy. Illegal is not a race, it's a crime."

"You know, this is amazing to me. We trust officers, we put guns on them, they make life and death decisions every day," he added. "They investigate capital crimes, they investigate sophisticated crimes, but we're afraid they're going to pick up the phone and call ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement)."

The tough rhetoric has angered immigration advocates, such as Isabel Garcia, an Arizona legal defender, who says the legislation "legalizes racial profiling."

"I think this bill represents the most dangerous precedent in this country, violating all of our due process rights," she told CNN's Tony Harris. "We have not seen this kind of legislation since the Jim Crow laws. And targeting our communities, it is the single most largest attack on our communities."

The measure would require immigrants to carry their alien registration documents at all times. It also requires police to question people if there's reason to suspect they're undocumented and targets those who hire illegal immigrant day laborers or knowingly transport them.

The state Senate's Democratic leadership slammed Monday's vote, saying the bill doesn't truly address Arizona's real immigration problems.

Senate Bill 1070 "is exactly why the federal government must act on immigration reform," said Democratic leader Jorge Luis Garcia in a written statement. "We cannot have states creating a jigsaw puzzle of immigration laws. This bill opens the doors to racial profiling with the provision that allows an officer to ask for citizenship papers from someone who only looks illegal."

The bill is an unfunded mandate that is "turning police officers into ICE agents and opening departments to lawsuits allowed by this bill," said Sen. Rebecca Rios.

Rios was referring to a provision in the bill that allows residents to sue their local governments if they feel the law isn't being enforced effectively.

According to Phoenix press, the governor, who has not taken a public stance on the bill, on Sunday told the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce that, "I will assure you that I will do what I believe is the right thing so that everyone is treated fairly."
