LEXINGTON, Ky. -- At a time when the U.S. teen pregnancy rate is on the rise, a program at the University of Kentucky is being hailed as a national model.
The head of the university's Young Parent Program said it's reduced the repeat teen pregnancy rate among participants, as well as brought down first-time teen pregnancy rates.
Dr. Hatim Omar runs the program as chief of UK's division of adolescent medicine.
He told the Lexington Herald-Leader that an outreach effort in Lincoln County helped reduce the rate of all pregnancies to 74 from 94 per 1,000 among 15- to 19-year-old girls in three years.
Dr. Dilip Patel of Michigan State University said the UK program is widely respected.......
