Come 2012, if we can manage to get rid of Obama and the progressives who now run Congress and we somehow manage to elect good leadership, how long will it take the United States to undo the damage that has been done and get America back on it's feet?

Years? Decades? Centuries? ???

The only way that is going to happen is to get rid of ALL of the inbred morons in Washington and vote in a whole new crew with term limits.

I am betting on about 20 years just to peel ourselves away from the edge of the cliff. Making positive ground? I couldn't even guess.

I'll say 25 years, that's the amount of time it takes for a generation to be born and grow into adulthood.

Has a country heading down to the degree the US is, within, ever really recovered to the same greatness or better? The Greeks were able to stave off disaster, but not for long. The Romans stood for centuries in the wind down, but never recovered before the invasions...

In modern times I fail to find any analogies.

In modern times I fail to find any analogies. That is what I think Kat. We will go in ups and downs for a while, but I don't find it hard to believe that we will ever really get back to where we were until we collapse and form different little countries like Europe.

That's how I see it too.

Good reply from both. Roman Empire in the West=modern Europe, after the MEP.

I don't think this nation will recover, at least not in the way I think the OP means it. I believe this country is on its way to becoming another "once was" nation. It will pretty much end up like most European countries.

The citizens will be relying on the government to subsidize productivity, support their existence and content with the lifestyle to which they have become accustomed. This country will rely on the international treaty for its defense and international courts for its justice. We will subvert our national soveriegnty to global opinion. We will have most of our citizens employed by the government (primarily in "service" jobs) and research to advance medicine, technology, manufacturing, etc will be limited. Those not employed by the government will find their hours restricted, vacations mandated and benfits non existant.

Socialism will be the desired norm, individual freedoms restricted and independent thinking reviled. We will bask in the memories of days long past and arrogantly demand that other nations become like us at the same time we demand their financial/military support.

If that sounds like "scarefest rhetoric" then so be it. I would suggest that history is full of examples that show exactly that road of decay for former world powers.

It depends on how much more damage is done between now and 2012. If we could start now..I'd say 5-10 yrs. before we start to move forward.

Now if the people continue to look toward the gov. to provide more and more, it'll never happen. This is the biggest problem we face IMO.
It's all up to US.

The key thing is to get rid of all the lifers that have been hanging onto their cushy political jobs like a life support system. Then put in those that we can mold. I suspect, even then, we will have our ups and downs and stable periods along the way, but IMO, America is forver changed by this. We the people, are now going to bide our time to see what care we will be allowed to have. And who the heck knows just what all is in that bill? What sort of damage is it going to do?

depends on how many times they knock us down between now and then......This is an excellent point...There are forces at work right here in the US that do not want us to recover.

Total long term recovery would depend on the American voters being smart enough to elect good people that would keep us on track for however long it takes to rebuild.

I agree, too far down the road already. Not a matter of which party, just degrees of differences, all in the same direction. The only divergences come from the fringe, the left being fascists, the right being fascists.
