What is the difference between a drain snake and a drain auger. And which would work better for a bathroom sink?

A snake has a simple blunt end to push the obstruction through. An auger has a spiral section of wire on the end to grab a rag or drill trough a soft solid obstruction. The auger works best to unclog a larger drain, like a toilet.

Since a bathroom sink drain is typically a 1-1/4" diameter, neither will work well if you're trying to go through the trap, although the snake might work.

You're better off disassembling the trap and cleaning it outside. Put a one gallon bucket under the trap to catch any water and shit that inevitably comes out when you do this.

Try Drano..probably hair clog.

Drano is mostly lye, and clogs are full of grease. Mix lye and grease and you make soap.

Yep, I first tried 3 tablets of Alka Seltzer with a cup of vinegar (read about doing that in a magazine). Didn't work. Then I bought some stuff called DrainPro gel. That didn't work either. Thanks for the info.

Most hair conditioner is basically grease, same with hand lotions. All that shit coats the drain and if you mix in long hair, it has more surface area to cling to and eventually makes a huge mess. All this is happening in a wet, aerobic environment full of nutrients so bacteria are everywhere....

We go out to dinner when the wife and son aren't around. I go to every field hockey game and every track meet. Driving back from these events I usually stop and we get a slushy or a frozen coke.

When my son turned 13 I told him that we were going to skip the whole teenager thing where he stopped listening to his parents. That didn't go as planned although he's better than I was at his age.

Well,I do like projects...especially ones that help keep the kids busy and out of trouble. I just don't do well with gardening...heck, I can't even keep house plants alive. I kill the poor little suckers one leaf at a time.

But... if it works then I may just have to try it.

I have not tried them, but I have a friend who swears by them. They sell them at gardeners.com, which is known for quality stuff.

For 7.99 though I'm not sure you'll be getting a big enough kit, but perhaps something that can grow cherry tomatoes. A full size plant needs a lot of soil to keep it nourished.

And of course a bigger soil bag will be heavy, and you'll need a secure place to hang it. And it has to survive wind and rain.

I'm thinking the single wall planter would be the best. I have a covered patio (yes...on ground),but could hang that kind of hanger where the plants could get some sun for part of the day.

If you have a covered patio then just put a screw-eye into the wood edge beam on the south side and hang it there.

Shadow, I use these indoors, and would recommend them. In addition to helping out all the time, they absolutely saved my plants while we were on vacation.

Good to know. There have be a few times when I have seen them at Walgreens where I almost bought them. I always seem to either over water or under water and figured this would be a good way to avoid that.

I didn't even think about vacations...another good reason they might be very useful!

I'm not exactly sure...20-30 lbs? OK say a 30# weight and multiply by 1.5 for dynamic loads (wind, swinging, etc) for 45#. You might be hanging it from 3/4" thick trim board and I'll assume its white pine. An 8 gauge screw is a common size and gives an allowable withdrawal load of 78# per inch of embedment; multiplied by 3/4 is 58#, which is greater than the 45# load.

Buy one in stainless steel so it doesn't rust. If the trim board isn't fastened well then get a longer screw and go though the trim to the structural wood above. Pre-drill for the screw with a 5/64" bit (or as close to that as you have).
