so my 11 year old is loving the concept of talking on a message board. He has been watching me and wanted to post too. I told him I would create him his own account (buzzkill) and start this thread so he can figure out how this works. Feel free to say Hi, but keep in mind I monitor everything he does and if he gets out of line, I will ban him!

Not to turn this into a debate, but I had similar conversations with my wife as of late.

At what point do we allow children to see the real world for themselves? Do we let them, and then parent them appropriately so that they learn from the situation? Will they not just go to places on the internet on their own and read anyway? Parental control software likely will not block every political forum out there, and if a kid has an interest in learning, they will go and read. Is it better to have a parent supervising their participation so that they can enjoy themselves, and ask questions if they don't understand something? Trinity made it extremely clear to me that she would be with him all along and monitoring his activity. And Trinity - if you like, I can disable his ability to see any forum you wish so that he only has access to those you give him permission to see. If he sees you online a lot and wants to be a part of the "gang", we could easily limit his reading experience to just chatting, music, movies, reviews...

I know as a kid I was exposed to much more than what can be read here, and we didn't even have the internet then! But we do now have the ability to choose online what we will allow ourselves to expose them to.

I'll do whatever Trinity asks as a parent. But I don't think giving an 11yr old a chance to participate in some harmless fun will scar him for life. If she;s vigilant about staying on top of things, and I'll happily do the same on staff's end, I don't see any harm in him having some friendly chats with Mom's friends.

As for some of the filth that gets tossed around in other forums, I agree, not even some elders should read that stuff! But again, if Mom wants, those sections can be prohibited.

I wasn't going to post this but after what jimnyc posted I will.............

Jesse is home schooled and I think this is a good opportunity for him and I to do something together that he is enjoying and can be an educational experience for him. I don't get into video games so we don't have much in common in that aspect.

I think this is a good opportunity for him to read and learn about world events and history through the board and get other peoples views on things with out me having to shove information down his throat.

He is showing an interest in something that I would have never expected him to show a interest in. I am going to let him pursue it because I hope it is an educational experience for him. You also have to remember Jesse is not a typical 11 year old he has a very high IQ and some very mature attitudes about things.

I will be monitoring his usage and he will only be on here when I am on here in the evenings so if you catch him on and I am not logged on as well, feel free to let me know and he will be banned for whatever length I determine.
