(Cleveland) - Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich wants to ban hand guns in America.

Kucinich is currently drafting legislation that would ban the purchase, sale, transfer or possession of hand guns by civilians. A gun buy-back provision will be included in the bill.

Kucinich announced this move in the aftermath of Monday’s deadly shooting at Virginia Tech.

Kucinich noted in a speech to congress that about 32 people die each day in America due to hand gun related incidents. 33 died at VT.

Kucinich says it's becoming "painfully obvious" that the easy availability of handguns constituents a growing national crisis of public health and safety, one that he says calls for a powerful, wide-ranging response from congress.

He says the level of violence in our society constitutes a national emergency.

Already this Congress, Kucinich has introduced HR 808, legislation to establish a Department of Peace and Nonviolence. It would address the issue of domestic violence, gang violence, and violence in the schools, which is reflected in the current homicide rates.

Kucinich notes recent studies that indicate many killers had histories of mental illness. He says the lack of parity for mental health care remains one of the most serious deficiencies in healthcare in the United States.

Kucinich has also proposed HR 676, Medicare for all. It would establish a universal not-for-profit healthcare system, which would provide full and comprehensive mental healthcare.

Unfortunately for him its been proven that when law abiding citizens own weapons, crime rates plummet:

Then why don't ya pursue that, without throwing out the Constitution, Mr. Kucinich?

wow. Speechless.

Funny how in all the agurements we've heard from liberals the last several years about the end goals of liberalism and socialism isn't to disarm its citizens....and now here it is right in our face.

Its just amazing, you'd think Democrats would be wise enough to not touch this, because they've always gotten burned. But they just can't help it. They are in power, and they want to see their vision of an America without the Constitution. And they want it now.

I don't know about the rate per day, but the FBI uniform crime reports give the murder rate per year. I think it's around 16,000 which is way over Iraq.

Where do the Dems come up with these guys? This dude isn't in touch with reality on more than one level. It'd be funny if it wasn't my soon to be raised taxes footing the bill.

Has Mr. Kucinich explained yet how making a law banning handguns, will disarm people who don't obey laws?

He can't pursue that either, without throwing out that same Constitution. There is no authority in that "antiquated document" (as liberals try to call it) for the Fed govt to provide or pay for universal health care. He'd have to amend the Constitution, or more likely just violate it as usual, to do that.

Our local BigMouth Centrist? Liberal? Whatever he is, He nailed it with this line in his opinion piece:

It's as if 32 dead college students are nothing more than fodder for political points of view on gun control.

It turns out that Cho would not had been able to buy the guns at the shop if the judge had forced him to go to the mental hospital instead of letting him go there voluntarily.

Not that it would of prevented Cho from eventually getting a weapon anyway by illegal means, but it does show that the current laws there work.....but a lax judge let this guy slip through the cracks.

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/04/19/gun.laws/index.html

Special Justice Paul M. Barnett, who filled out the certification and order for involuntary admission to a mental health facility, checked the box that said: "The alternatives to involuntary hospitalization and treatment were investigated and deemed suitable."

"Only if I order them into a hospital is there any effect on their gun rights," Barnett told CNN on Wednesday. (Read the judge's order - PDF)

Virginia and federal law prohibit the sale of guns to anyone who has been sent unwillingly to a mental institution.
