View Full Version : No longer unemployed =D
T'has been many long weeks but atlast i've got a job,
Went for a interview a last Tuesday to be a resercher on goverment policy, they said they'd phone back on Tuesaday night, when they hadn't called by Thursday i called them and had to leave my name an number as the women who did the interviews was away, as they hadn't called by Monday i phoned again, the women said i didn't get the job and so they didn't phone, at which point i told them that it was quite rude that she hadn't called to say i didn't get the job IMO,
Anyways she just phoned me back now, one of the people they did select hasn't turned up for the first day of training, and that they'd be happy for me to take the spot, i start tomorrow =)
Moral of the story; Keep phoning the buggers so they don't forget your name :coffee:

Cheers,
Basicly i'm given a list of phone numbers which i have to call, and if the person who picks up agrees to it then i spend 5-10 mins asking them what areas of goverment policy are they happy with in their area, what they feel needs more investment in ect, and taking opinion polls on certain issues, this data will then be collected and given to goverment think-tanks to start drafting policy for our next general election, which is about 7-8 months away,

I love those kind of calls. I make the person sit and listen to my political views. I never answer with just a simple yes or no.

Congrats, Noir! Glad you found something, but just like here I wish it was your private sector growing, not public. Still I'm very happy for you!

Indeedy, its a private phone company that have been hired by the Gov for reserch, so i guess i'm getting paid by the company, but they're getting money from the Gov, so its kinda public and private i guess.
and cheers all
So guess who's unemployed again =D
Kind of annoyed as i did like the job, but such is life,
Well, i full on slept in for work, like i woke up today at 6pm and i was meant to start work at 4pm xD
So i phoned them and my manager was super pissed, which i didn't take well atall. Cus i went well out of my way to get too the job, i had to dander down to the bus station (about 30min away) and get 2 connecting buses, and like if i missed the bus for work i'd get a taxi which would cost me £25 and i only make £22 in a normal 3 hour shift and one of the times i got a taxi i had no other money on me, so i couldn't even get a bus back, i had to walk, which meant leaving work at 8pm and i wasn't back in my flat until 3am =/ but i didn't really mind cus i had a job so it didn't matter if some days i lost money on it or whatnot,
So anyways i know i've done all that to make sure i get to work on time and stuff, and i slept in for one day, and she got pissy on the phone so i told her that it wasn't working out and that i would not longer be in, so she was like fine and hung up =/

 How long you had the position? I've been at mine for 12 years now. Been late 3 times. Been 'sick' 6 days. Total personal days, 15 (5 when my dad died, 2 when my mom did. 1 when my sister was buried.) Oh yeah, 1 when Bush was in town. ;)
Noir, not a good idea to be late for work in the first 5 years, at least in these parts.

I knows, its really not like me atall, in my last job (which i had for 3 years) i only had one day off (and that was planned as i had root canal surgery that day)
The only reason i ended up sleeping in was cus i was up all night with a friend who's having a hard time, and what with timezone difference it meant i didn;t get ta sleep till 10am, and to make it into work i have to leave my flat at about 12 noon (to get to work at 4, to work til 8, and then get back home about 11) So really it wasn;t worth it at all, but still i liked to have it as something to do and to make me atleast some money.
But the manager went waaaay overboard, like i dunno maybe she's had a bad day, but i'd say it was uncalled for,

Dear Noir,
Please allow me this opportunity to apologize for my insensativity in regards to your sleeping late in your first month and getting hacked. I am so sorry. My post was totally uncalled for, biused against you and immature. Again I am sorry.
Noir, I should have known better than to use you as the blunt object in a blunt objecgt joke. It was wrong. For this I am truly sorry. I realize anyone can get a bit lazy after staying up too late, perhaps not making a good wake up plan or whjatever caused you to not take your job serious enough so as to lose it. Again, I am sorry.
If you require further sarcasm about my feelings over this incident, would like to tell me to shut up again or just would like an innocent person to take out your frustrations on, please feel free to contact me at any time. (After midnite on Sunday I'll be in bed cause I have to get up early for work)
Sincerely,
Emmett
PS - I am so sorry you lost your job.

How disappointing that you didn't cherish the job enough to make sure you made it to work on time. Anything worth having is worth working for, so if it takes work to get to work, then so be it.
I worked 60 to 70 hours a week, 40 minutes from my home, drove 1,100 miles a month to get back for forth for several years as a single mom with three young kids at home.
Please forgive me if I am not terribly sympathetic about this forfeiture of a job because that's exactly what it was. :poke:

I know it is different out there, I had a friend who lived in manchester (the morrisey fan) he was very ill, and he had no car had to walk to town for meds and groceries, doctors appointments, it would be an all day event because he was so ill. He said taxi's were too expensive but I think once in a while if he had to go a distance he took the rails. Perhaps you could get a job at the college campus bookstore or local college radio station:coffee:

What about McDonalds?
Let me tell you a little story. People like bash folks that flip burgers. I know I did when one of my buddies, well, a guy we all knew in school got a job there when he was 14 and we were in like 9th grade. He was still at the same McDonald's 2 years later when I got my drivers license. We used to pull up to the window, order our food, get it and haul ass without paying. He would watch as we left. We would then ride back by and deposit the trash in the parking lot while we saw him carrying out the trash.
Well, it's been thirty something years since then and well.....while I work 100 hour weeks trying to keep a dingy little family business on the ground he is long since retired from Mickey Dee's, five or six years ago. He draws like a boo koo dollars on his retirement, has about three houses, every toy on earth. You see, he kept that job as a burger handler, finished school, went to college, still kept working there and then still kept working there. As a matter of fact he worked there until he was like the third or fourth highest ranking guy at the company....IN THE WORLD!
I guess you know the moral of this story:::::
Get your ass up in the morning and flip burgers dude.

Echoing Honey Bee here. There was a period of 4 years where I worked between 75-90 hours per week. I'd finished my third bachelor's degree, with education credentials, but didn't find a job right away, at least full time.
Sooo, I worked full-time at licensed insurance producer for State Farm-40 hours with no benefits.
32 hours at local grocery to pick up insurance, which would qualify for 'gold standard' or whatever they are calling it.
18 hours as part-time instructor in high school program for at-risk students in Constitution and psych classes.
For the two years before I got my current position I subbed full-time, while working at grocery, part-time high school, and part-time insurance for AllState. That's when I crossed the 90 hours per week. I was exhausted and had a child in middle school and two in high school.
I was not late, ever. Nor did I call in sick, not once.

LOL, yeppers Emmett, you know impressive eh....seems to me you've got lots in common with Kathianne and me in this hard work, long hours respect. Single dad starting up a company with kids in tow....no pun intended.
Seems we've paid enough dues to wax the ears of a young upstart who wants to rag on his boss for fussing at him. The poor woman is quite possibly a single mom herself, raising kids by working two or three jobs, maybe also going to school.
Hey Noir....how about this:
If you have a disagreement with a woman, walk a mile in her shoes. If she still doesn't agree with you, it's okay because you'll be a mile away and you'll have her shoes. :laugh2:

I see your point of view about Noir not caring about the job much. But he already acknowledged that, he said he didn't need the job, he just wanted a job to have something else to do. In that context and for his age a 19 year old with no mortgage or family to support, I don't really think it was that big of deal. The way I see it, is the job is meant for someone else who really needs it and Noir sleeping in was a way for the position to open up to someone who will work hard and appreciate the opportunity.

Very true. At the same time in the past few weeks he has portrayed himself as hardworking and anxious for work. It's fine if he can afford to take a pass whenever someone acts pissy. He should however recognize time marches, with blank spaces in resume. As you say though, he's a kid.
A kid that often condescends, so should expect some back. ;)

I believe he probably is hardworking. There have been times where I have worked for an unreasonable boss or a company that I knew was not doing right by the customers, but I had to stick it out because I had dependants I had bills and needed the job. I think however, in those instances if I didn't have dependants I would have told the company or boss to shove it ! He has the freedom to do that, so good for him. Also I have to acknowledge that while he only worked a month, in the month he was employed he did make a donation to debate policy board, which means he is a thoughtful person. I don't think he just disregards things, but some situations may not be ideal. We have no idea what the company or boss was like really.

Yep I sure would, given the context of which I previously painted, If I had NO dependants or obligations and my boss was haressing me intimidating me, or having me do things with customer accounts I thought was wrong. You bet I would quit. But that is not my situation, I have kids and obligations and bills, I am the sole provider so I endure whatever I need to, and since I do have kids I would work at a crappy place to put food on the table for my kids. I also have never called in sick to my job. I worked 2 jobs at 16 was married and trying to juggle high school. I pay my bills and Im responsible. However, Honestly if I had no obligation and my job was shitty, I would quit.

I think chloe has hit the nail on the bap, i didn't so much need the job for money, which is just as well cus i hardly made any (infact i would have made more money on unemployment benifits for the month i did work, money i made in a month by working £180, and thats not including all the buses and taxis and whatnot to get to work, money i could get from benifits in a month £240 with no expensises to be taken out of it)

True, but I was already married by 19yrs and had a lot of responsibility, so I have no clue what I would have been like if my life situation was different. Besides I think the younger generation grew up in an "instant gratification" era, at least thats what I notice with most the teens that come over to my house. There is an entitlement vibe.

That's an explanation, not a justification. Quite strange position of our young friend or any others, given the state of economy.

I can understand that you were working more for something to do than a necessity. But you do realize that you are responsible to be there, on time, during your scheduled hours. It's important to your employer even if it's not important to you. In that sense you are showing irresponsibility and a disregard of the people that hired you in good faith. If you don't need to work then concentrate on school and don't. Don't get a job your going to do a half ass job at. And don't complain when you get called on the carpet. You were hired because they needed someone to do that job, not for someone to yell at or intimidate. Your not showing up for work means someone has to cover for you.
This is meant as constructive criticism not a put down.

LOL!!!! Kids, they just kill me. They are so clueless.
I'd have been all over my own kids like white on rice if they were late to work for any reason. No need for a boss to nail them for it. I don't care if the job is collecting snails they better get their butt there on time, work hard, and make that employer all the money they can make them.
LOL, I'm trying really hard to think of something creative to say and not just be insulting. I used to get every punk kid that came out on the jobs I was on so I could break them. I would drive them into the ground like tent pegs. If they survived working with me they had a pretty good shot at making it in the trades.
I fired an owners kid for being 30 seconds late after I warned him not to be late again. Some punk kid comes out on a job replacing someone who actually wants or needs the job and then doesn't have the decency or work ethic show up on time, he's gone. I drove a minimum of 65 miles to work every day for more than 12 years, I spent 4-5 hours a day on the road, I worked 7 days a week 12 hour days and more for many, many months straight and then some punk kid don't wanna show up on time because its a little hard or inconvenient, what a joke. Man up little boy, adulthood is right around the corner.
An old timer once told me, fire them first thing in the morning, you'll feel better all day.
You're in for a rude awaking.
I expect as much, which is a shame, but such is life i guess,
First off i wasn't fired, i quit,
Secondly, you fired a guy for being 30 seconds late? If that is true then i really don't know what to think of you,
Thirdy, i guess overall you're right, i did prioritize somthing else over the job, but tehre are always more important thing in life than work,

Yes, I fired him for being 30 seconds late and yes I would do it again. He was warned more than once and if it really mattered to him he would have made sure he left early enough to be there 10 - 15 minutes early at the latest. I always allow 30 minutes to an hour extra to make any appointment I have. If I show up with 10 minutes to spare I'm running late.
I had some of the hottest, highest, dirtiest jobs any man would ever have to do, I worked for some of the biggest jerks in my trade but I did every job to the best of my ability and as a professional craftsmen. When a company ran out of work and left me home I was on the phone making arrangements for other work. Quitting was never an option as a father and husband.
After I became a Christian I informed the companies I worked for that I would not under any circumstances work on Sundays, if that was a problem there was no hard feelings I would just go to work elsewhere. I also informed them that if something my children were doing was important enough for me to give up a days pay that I would be taking the day off but that I would give them a couple weeks notice if at all possible. Other than that I was never late and only missed work if I was so sick that i couldn't drive to work.
