Who was the best all around baseball player in history? Why do you think so?

hard to say really, because there was a time before even stats were kept, ya know?
But - I can't think of anyone who dominated a 10 year span like Griffey Jr. in the 90s.

Best pitcher, IMO, was Nolan Ryan.
Best non-pitcher... that's a tough one. It depends on what you're looking for.

Ted Williams. He was an absolutely phenomenal hitter with incredible lifetime stats and he took time off to fight in two wars.

I'd have to throw Willie Mays' name in the hat.
Also, Pete Rose, just because those a'holes that run MLB won't give him a shot at the Hall of Fame. I don't care what he did. They should not take away his fan's pleasure at seeing one of the greatest hitters of all time in the Hall and although, I respected his abilities, I was never a true Pete Rose fan.

I couldn't say who the best baseball player is/was. I guess that's why there is a Hall of Fame.
