WASHINGTON (AP) The Senate agreed Monday to take up legislation to triple the size of the AmeriCorps program and open up opportunities for more people to serve their communities.

Lawmakers voted 74-14 to move to the legislation that would expand AmeriCorps from its current 75,000 positions to 250,000 over the course of eight years. Sixty votes were needed to bring the bill to the floor. The measure is expected to come up for a final vote in the Senate sometime this week.

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., who is being treated for brain cancer, made a rare appearance on the Senate floor to vote for the bill that he co-sponsored with Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah. Kennedy's office said he is expected to be on Capitol Hill until Congress goes on recess April 4.

The legislation would also create five groups to help poor people, improve education, encourage energy efficiency, strengthen access to health care and assist veterans.

Sen. Barbara Mikulski, a Maryland Democrat, said the proposal is an investment that "will pay dividends long beyond anything that we can imagine."

And this is a problem why?

Because little seems to have come out of it, other than for the 'volunteers. The following is an example. If you want more, go to AmeriCorps own website (http://www.americorps.org/), it's all about the 'volunteers'. We don't need more indoctinations sites. If they wish to give students money for college, do so:

Commentary: AmeriCorps case needs resolution

Sacramento Bee |

last updated: March 24, 2009 03:12:00 PM

This editorial first appeared in the Sacramento Bee.

Since AmeriCorps began in September 1994, about 2,600 nonprofit and community groups a year have worked with volunteers to improve communities. For their service, volunteers get a $4,725 education award for college or graduate school and a living allowance.

Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, some nonprofit organizations working with AmeriCorps volunteers have run into problems that range from human error and ignorance of regulations to outright fraud....

And this is a problem why?Congress is insane! America is going bankrupt and last week congress demanded to buy up millions of more acres for the far left national park service and this week they "invest" billions of dollars in paid community service programs under the guise of volunteerism?????????????????????????????????????? ??????????????? What the hell is wrong with congress sending billions to folks like ACORN and the assholes that protested against the shooting of the cop killer in CA??????????????????????????????????????????????? Congress just has nothing to do so they find every excuse to find a way to put us in more debt... damn, the national park service can't keep up with the property that they have already and ACORN will only guarantee that the new program and their political support for their paycheck stays in power... You will lose your social security because of stupid shit like this and the bullshit stimulus... the bullshit Wall St. bailouts and everyone just ignores it because it doesn't cost a trillion dollars so it must not be important??????????????????????????????
