Obama: Stimulus delay not an option
Barack Obama on Friday expressed impatience with “posturing” on Capitol Hill over objections to the size and shape of his economic stimulus plan – saying he won’t stand for delays that slow down help to the American people.
“Just show me, if you can show me something that is going to work, I will welcome it. . .What is not an option is for us to sit and engage in posturing or standard partisan fights, when the American people are out there struggling,” Obama said at a news conference to announce his intelligence team.
Senate Democrats have criticized Obama’s plan to make $300 billion in tax cuts a big chunk of his roughly $800 billion stimulus package, saying they question whether they would truly jump-start the economy as he hopes. Several have said the money is better spent on road and bridge projects that put people to work quickly.
Obama insisted he’s open to any ideas to “hone” the package and improve it, but not if they lead to unnecessary delays – particularly in light of job numbers Friday that showed unemployment hit a 16-year high of 7.2 percent. But he was non-committal when asked if he would consider increasing the size of the stimulus package.
“I want this to work. This is not an intellectual exercise, and there’s no pride of authorship,” Obama said. “If somebody has an idea for a tax cut that’s better than we’ve proposed, then
