I saw this topic in my readings, thought it might be fun to see all the 'jobs' we've held. For some of us, very long, others may well be short, due to ages.

1. Paper route for local grocery-I was 8 and did it for 2 years. Got paid a penny a paper, 200 papers, twice a week.

2. Sold Christmas cards door to door, with a friend. Saw the ad in the back of a comic book, I think was probably when we were 9 or 10.

3. Took orders for homebaked bread, after making 10 loaves, we were bored, kept the money. (not something I'd list). :laugh2: PS, same friend was with me as the Christmas cards.

4. First 'real job'-waitress 14-16

5. Customer service Sear's remodeling-16-17. (Still waitressing too!)

6. Overlapping with the two above, worked in car wash one summer. Only girl and I got good tips! Hot & sticky though. Only physical labor job, until I worked in grocery story.

7. 17-21 College years, Kroch's & Brentano's, bookseller. Eventually became juvenile book buyer for the store I worked in.

8. 21-25 Illinois Bell/SBC divestiture specialist/commercial communications consultant.

9. 25-39 Full-time mom. Well also did lots of volunteer work, picked up my real estate license, waitressed for a bit. Went back to Kroch's & Brentano's a couple times, went back for temporary consult with SBC/AT&T to help with some MSA stuff. From 36-37 full-time student. Picked up teaching credentials.

10. Picked up insurance producer license. 39-41 full time at State Farm; also part-time at grocery in meat cutters union; also teaching night school classes for at-risk high school students. Averaged about 78 hours work a week, not counting paper grading.

11. 43-44 Full-time substituting, still working grocery, part-time insurance writing for Allstate agent, still teaching night classes.

12. 44- Full time teaching, (with benefits). Sometimes part-time work in bank, Talbot's, Penny's, tutoring.

3- Bagel King - 17-19. Mix, roll and bake the bagels. Had to be there by 4am and to this day I've been an early bird as a result.

4- Courier Express - 19-21. Delivered supplies as a courier. Not time sensitive but large groups of packages that got split up and delivered (usually like free samples for doctors offices. Got myself 1,000 free bottles of visine this way!)

5- Clean Air Company - 21-23. Installed, fixed and maintained clean air machines (smokeeaters). Clients were bars and office buildings in the tri-state area.

6- AIS Corporation - 23-27. My first real job in the corporate world out of school. This was a medical billing company. I was a field service engineer fixing computer equipment and clients sites (hospitals and doctors offices)

7- Sony Corporation - 27-28. Hardware technician at their headquarters in NYC.

8- Law Firm - 28-34. Hardware technician & Network Analyst. Had about 2,000 employees.

9- Cadbury Schweppes - 35-38. Desktop Analyst. Desktop hardware and software support for their corporate headquarters in NY, about 400 employees.

worked at a horse race track one summer, and a nursing home the other. Don't put the nursing home on a real resume tho cuz i walked out and it wouldn't be a good reference.

currently, college/nursing school and I strongly predict my next and last real job will be as a RN.

Kath, what's it like to be a book buyer? I think I would love that, but I suppose like many things, it may not be as great as I think it is. Dish!

It was fun, though it was departmental at one store, not like being a buyer for the main items, each store was unique. I think I got a $.75 raise and a few hours a month to go through publisher magazines for new releases and reviews. I'm pretty sure the chain had always been limited to Chicago area, I miss it. They had an out of print search, first edition club, book restoration...

Pretty much I could order up to 5 copies of any book I thought might go over at our store, beyond what would already be sent by the main juvenile manager. Same type of store ordering went on for fiction, non-fiction, technology. Truth is, I think working in a bookstore of that calibre may have been my most fun job, if not most interesting. Bonus, we could check out books to read, but if the 'spine broke' had to buy it, with a 35% discount. ;)

So it is fun! Are there any repercussions if you buy books, and they don't sell?

It's been a long time, but as long as the book was in print, not a special order, can return it to the publisher for credit.

Ok, it's probably more fun w/o the money and your little players. One of my son's friends is now coaching soccer for farm type team, a couple have tried out for the Fire. He seems to like it well enough, but I think he'd rather be playing.

i will tell you...there is nothing like coaching......it will teach you more about yourself and your ability to manage people than any management book or management class you can take.....

I remember coaching football my first year. Looking down at all those little faces and thinking.... Oh shit! Somehow AI pulled it off though. It's like I just became someone else and being "Coach" was an identity. Stepping out of your world for a little while each week, 2 to 3 times, to become the all knowing God of football that is looked up to by 25 or so kids is AWESOME!!!!

The challenge of taking on 25 little eight year old kids who don't know what a "down" is and by the end of the year producing a team that not only snaps up in unison after "down" and are set at the same time, can run a three back offense and tackle like steamrollers....... but they are all team players. They've participated and are usually better for it. I miss coaching!!!!!!!!!!!
