Wal-Mart worker dies after shoppers knock him down
NEW YORK – A Wal-Mart worker was killed Friday after an "out of control" throng of shoppers eager for post-Thanksgiving bargains broke down the doors at a suburban store and knocked him to the ground, police said.
At least four other people, including a woman eight months pregnant, were taken to hospitals for observation or minor injuries, and the store in Valley Stream on Long Island closed for several hours before reopening.
Nassau police said about 2,000 people were gathered outside the store doors at the mall about 20 miles east of Manhattan. The impatient crowd knocked the man to the ground as he opened the doors, leaving a metal portion of the frame crumpled like an accordion.
"This crowd was out of control," said Nassau police spokesman Lt. Michael Fleming. He described the scene as "utter chaos."
Dozens of store employees trying to fight their way out to help the man were also getting trampled by the crowd, Fleming said. Witnesses said that even as the worker lay on the ground, shoppers streamed into the store, stepping over him.
Kimberly Cribbs, who witnessed the stampede, said shoppers were acting like "savages."
"When they were saying they had to leave, that an employee got killed, people were yelling 'I've been on line since yesterday morning,'" she said. "They kept shopping."

that's happened before. and at a wal mart many years ago. they had DVD players on sale for 29 bucks. except 1 or 2 of the shoopers died and many were hospitalized. just because of a lousy DVD player.

it also happened here locally at a target store. lots of injuries but no one died. I ALWAYS stay home the day after thanksgiving.

Things like this are why I hate Christmas commercialism in the first place, and why I think our culture has its priorities all out of whack.

I can understand why alot of stores are focused on the Christas season. Its where they make their money. If they dont make their money now, they cant stay open the rest of the year and people get laid off.
But this is a whole new level of disgust for our culture. What a way to start a blessed season, killing someone. I mean im all for getting a good deal, but its not worth someones freaking life. I mean what are these parents telling their children? its disgusting

Me too. I like almost everything about it. No matter how commercial it is, you can choose to personally avoid the nonsense, and make Christmas the way you want it in your home. We cut back years ago on giving gifts to all the siblings etc., by choosing a name out of a hat for one Secret Santa gift.
What I don't like are the secularists that are trying to spoil it for the rest of us.

No one outside of ourselves can 'spoil Christmas.' It's not theirs to do. Kinda like crazy JS saying that our celebrations ruined the Winter Solstice for him, not possible. He just wants to be miserable.

Yep, good suggestion. Also posting off duty policemen, that wouldn't allow the surge in the first place. Not rent a cops, w/o force.

A little better, thanks! I'm finding that trying not to put weight on it is making me walk funny, especially in the velcro orthopedic "boot" the doctor gave me. All I need now are those huge wrap around black sunglasses and a Buick, and I'm ready for AARP.

I think the prosecutors will have a very difficult, if not impossible, time, distinguishing between those who negligently (or worse) stomped on him, and those who were just swept along with the crowd. They might not have too much trouble figuring out who first knocked him down, though.
That poor man. It seems like an awful way to go.

why not have physical lines, like getting onto rides at amusement parks, getting your citizenship....there were 5000+ people wanting to get sworn in for their citizenship in los angeles last summer, single file, in line no problems.

I heard that Best Buy employees came out and asked the customers what they most wanted to buy, then passed out tickets in proportion to stock on hand for said items. That way people in line knew whether or not they could get 'what' they had come for, decide to shop or go home. Seems reasonable.
I still think with numbers of over 1k, they said that Walmart had more than 2k, there is a crowd control issue and the store needed real authority presence.

IMO no retail store should never be dealing with a mob they simply don't have the resources..Now, these retailers are creating these mobs so they do have a responsibility to control their own creation..That's a moral/legal liability view.
This store in an attempt to capitalize on sales, like all the rest, was shut down for at least the day losing a great deal of revenue. It just ain't worth it, IMO. They ALL should stop this early sale crap. That's a business view.

I hear ya, I'm unsure of the advantage of 'early birds' but if they are going to do it, do it right. The example of Best Buy would be good. My understanding, had to pick 'one' for a ticket. If it were a laptop, cool. I Blue Ray, ok. A cam corder, deal. Let's say someone at the front, "I want all." No can do. Pick one with a ticket, take your chances on the rest. Makes the more customers entering, yet they know they will get one sweet deal, at least. Those in the back if it were all gone, know they won't get any of the 'big deals.' No pushing, no shoving.

Wal-mart isn't the problem here, though. The problem is the "GIMMIE!" philosophy of our society, and it exists everywhere. Think about it, how often do you hear people whining about how they're "broke", but are going to be getting a brand new HDTV. Broke would be more like, "Well, I figure if we stick mainly to ramen and water for the next month, then we can save enough to get the lights back on."
This event is the result of the mania we have for hoarding. People act stricken at the concept that their child won't have the brand new limited edition Nintendo DS, or that they won't have an HDTV in their room. It's a sickness, one that we could solve up, but continue to put off.

Wal-Mart issued the following statement following the deadly stampede:
"The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority. A tragic situation occurred this morning prior to opening at our Valley Stream, NY location. We are saddened to report that a gentleman who was working for a temporary agency on our behalf died following the incident and a few of our customers were injured. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families at this difficult time.
At this point, facts are still being assembled and we are working closely with the Nassau County Police as they investigate what occurred. As there is still an ongoing investigation, any further comment would be best served coming from them."

Yes, but at sporting events everyone has an assigned seat. Here people were trying to push and shove themselves up to the front in order to be the first one in the TINY doorway.

I remember almost ALL the concerts I went to in the late 70's and early to mid 80's were festival seating. That all stopped somewhere around 88 or so....

Well I was a bit young in 79 to be at a concert, but I do remember festival seating. People still lined up, some sleeping there to save their spot, at least at the 1 or 2 I went to.

But you still go to stores, right? Wal-Mart is by no means the only place this occurs. Because they're the biggest retailer, it simply shows there more. Every christmas this near riot occurs at malls, and shopping centers around the country. There have been shootings that have occured at Toys R Us over a toy. It's not the store, it's the consumers.

Everyone sues wal-mart, it's like some sort of imperative. It couldn't possibly be that 2000 people decided a tv was more important than a man's life, and nearly killed a pregnant woman for that matter, yeah, it's Wal-Mart's fault. Damn them for doing what every single other store in the whole of the country did on black friday, damn them.
Btw, how many cops and security guards do you think are available on Long Island, anyhow? alright, we'll assign enough to have a full squad at each store.
