LIMA, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Peru hopes to strengthen military cooperation with Russia during Russian President Dimitri Medvedev's visit to Peru, Peruvian Vice President Luis Giampietri said Sunday.
Medvedev will begin a state visit to Peru on Monday after his participation in the 16th Economic Leaders' Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in the Peruvian capital on Saturday and Sunday.
Medvedev's visit gives Peru an opportunity to promote military cooperation with Russia and to upgrade Peru's military stockpile, Peru's official Andina news agency quoted Giampietri as saying.
Peru and Russia have signed agreements on the maintenance and repair of the military equipment bought by Peru from Russia, said Giampietri, also chairman of the 2008 APEC High-Level Extraordinary Commission.
The Russian leader's visit "aims to strengthen ties between both countries and exchange views on international and regional matters of mutual interests," the Andina news agency said.
During Medvedev's visit, the two sides are expected to sign several agreements in fields like the fight against drug trafficking, and cooperation between Russia's Academy of Sciences and Peru's National Council of Science and Technology.
