JOE the Plumber isn't really called Joe, doesn't have a plumbing licence, and may not be hurt by Barack Obama's tax plan after all.

That was the surprising story yesterday about overnight celebrity Samuel Joseph (Joe) Wurzelbacher, the man whose recent exchange with Senator Obama over taxes was appropriated by John McCain in Thursday's debate between the presidential candidates.

Mr Wurzelbacher clashed with Senator Obama this week on the campaign trail in northwestern Ohio.

He said he was a plumber who feared the Democrat's plan to raise taxes on those earning more than $US250,000 ($360,000) a year would sabotage his bid to buy his own plumbing business.

The back-and-forth, captured on videotape, almost instantly transformed the tradesman into a conservative hero.

In the debate, Senator McCain made so many references to "Joe the plumber" that he sounded like a potential Cabinet member.

A new media man-of-the-moment was born. But, by yesterday, the truth was emerging. His hometown newspaper, the Toledo Blade, reported Mr Wurzelbacher didn't have a required plumbing licence and wasn't registered to work as a plumber in Ohio. More to the point, he did not have the money to buy the plumbing business where he now works.

And, even if he could buy the business, it was unlikely it would net the kind of income that would place it in a higher tax bracket under Senator Obama's plans.

On the contrary, under the Democrat's tax proposal, the plumbing business Mr Wurzelbacher has his eye on might be in line for a tax cut.

And that's something the tradesman has more reason than many to want. He owes about $US1200 in back taxes to Ohio.

Meeting the media yesterday, Mr Wurzelbacher said he doesn't have a licence because he doesn't need one.

He said he works for a small plumbing firm that does residential work. Because he works for someone else, he doesn't need a licence.

Discussing the debate, Mr Wurzelbacher said he was surprised that his name was mentioned so many other times.

"That bothered me. I wished that they had talked more about issues that are important to Americans," he told reporters gathered outside his home.

He said meeting the Republican candidate would be an honour but said he hadn't been contacted by the McCain campaign.

Still, the plumber wouldn't say who he was voting for and brushed off a question about whether he could influence the election or other voters.

"I don't have a lot of pull. It's not like I'm Matt Damon," he said.

"I just hope I'm not making too much of a fool of myself."

He really is called Joe, by most people who know him. Lots of people go by their middle names.

If the best anyone can say about Obama's tax plan, is that some people MAY not be hurt by it, I'd say that indicates some pretty hefty problems with Obama's tax plan.

Well, OK. Now that we've disposed of the liberals' desperate quibbles and attempts to change the subject, can we get back to the real issue?

Joe said that if he buys the plumbing business, he'd be taxed more by Obama. That was one concern. But what was the real kicker, was Obama's reply.

Obama said that some people were getting tax cuts, and the wealthy would have to pay more taxes. And the reason the wealthy would pay more, Obama said, was to pay for the tax cuts for the others. Then Obama stated frankly that his goal was to "spread the wealth around".

It was Obama's first honest admission of what his overall agenda was. And it's the same overall agenda that Socialism (or its kissing cousin communism) has: From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

The liberals are in full coverup mode over Obama's statement. They could care less whether Joe the Plumber has the correct licenses. But they must do anything, anything to divert attention from Obama's statement of socialism. So they are giving Joe the Plumber the full-bore anal exam usually reserved for conservative Presidents, dead princesses, and Republicans' Supreme Court justice appointees, and are splashing the results all overr the front pages, in hopes that people will forget the real news: What Obama said about his own goals.
