I think My step dad is the only person in my family that was in the military, my grandfathers were both dead when I was born, you must be really proud. The newspaper clip is cool too.

my dad's brother, my uncle also served. he flew Catalina black cats and killed Uboats. so when my time and my war came they reminded me the USN was a family tradition.

several weeks ago i was going thru some old VHS tapes. I found one that was a documentary on my dad's ship. it included the 4 other Philly's going back to the 1700's. with some amazing video of his ship during the war. it was given to me right after he died in 97. we have no idea how he got it or from whom. but it was fading and discolored. these old tapes over the years deteriorate. I had to save it so i acquired some software that transfer VHS tapes to DVD's. so at least now its preserved.
the Nazi's considered the name Philadelphia as a part of American history and went after it with vengeance trying to sink it. they even broadcast a fake story from Berlin it was sunk. my dad never told me this.

the link above was on a lady's website i found in a search engine. her late dad served on the same ship as mine. oddly enough he died just a few days before mine. so its a memorial to him and all who served it. she wanted a copy of that DVD real bad so I burned one and sent it to her. she's one happy camper now

I served on three ships and beileve it or not I only remember the name of one...The USS Duluth, an LSD I think.

I was with the 2/4 Marine Battalion Landing Team or some called it a MAU unit.[Marine Amphibious Unit]

The fleet was a launch platform for missions into VietNam, Laos and Cambodia although the US government denied our presence in the later 2 on many occassions.

The SouthVietnamese Army and US air missions were permited by treaty, but I think there was a restriction concerning US boots on the ground in Laos.

LOL!...Seems the government is always doing something they're not supposed to be doing or showing up somewhere their not supposed to be.

I turned 20 years old on the VietNam-Laos border but still to this day ain't sure which side of it I actually was on.

Not too many rules or borders were sacred to either side back in those crazy days if you know what I mean.

We also sailed the Indian Ocean to evacuate westerners from Pakistan when India fought a 14 day war with them...I don't even know who won...LOL!

They were American and European Christian missionaries, Red Cross workers and some business people stranded in the boonies for the most part...Marines to the rescue...LOL!

I also made it to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and the Phillipines...Had a great time, especially in Subic Bay, I'm sure you've been there bro. :cheers2::boobies:

You boys did a hell of a job and I was always happy to see the ships come into sight from our choppers when returning from a mission.

I worked in communications. but we were not privileged to secret ops like you went on. borders were their safe haven. but going after them lead to someone knowing an leaking the info.
when I was transferred to the Newport News we operated down in the corp areas. Gunfire support. we always got calls from Marine and Army. they told us where they wanted it and we hit the bulls eye. when the New Jersey came over with those 16" guns she laid waste to anything she aimed at. I put in for a transfer but so did everyone else. we all wanted to served on a piece of history.
was I in Subic. that was home away from home. the US 7th fleet operated out of there. no doubt you remember the lovely town of Olongapo. here's a link to Subic: link (link)

Your right Hog, the government didn't want to talk about crossing borders. Once when we were on the Cambodian border we had been receiving sniper fire for days. The Captain was tired of taking casualties and sent my platoon over the border to get them. He was almost court martialed for it. We found a staging camp and got chased out by the cambodians.

My old brigade has a reunion every two years. I was able to get to one. Have a buddy who was in my company that lives about three hours away. We get together once in a while and swap stories and memories. He keeps a close contact with everyone he can and keeps me up to date.

I was there in 67 and my avatar is the brigade patch.

I loved Marines. we could knock em down but they kept gettin' up !!!! :lol: peace broYep, that's the one...The reason the Duluth stuck in my mind is, I rode a cyclone out on board her and as you know she's a flat bottom lady which means she rocks and rolls in a big blow and high seas.

I was always amazed at the accuracy of those monster guns on board the ships.

Anyone would think the movement of the ship and the motion of the ocean would severly affect their aim.

But you boys were deadly accurate...That's what I meant by "you guys are the best in the world at what you do".

I almost felt sorry for charly sometimes when you guys were raining hell down on them.

My brother-in-law who was Army and not prone to lying or exagerating, was there during that time period and told me many stories.

To me Nam/Cam was two shitholes seperated by an invisible line which made it appear to be one big shithole...LOL!

I have one old buddy, also about three hours away, that I talk to on the phone and visit back and forth every couple of years.

It brings back many good memories along with some bad ones...We laugh joke and whoop it up but too many beers eventually bring on a few tears.

Cambodia looks no different than Vietnam and I never knew when we were over the so-called border. They could sit over there and shoot at us but we weren't suppose to do anything about it. That's what finally pissed the Captain off. After our little excursion the sniping stopped.

It was called a shit hole because the whole country always smelled. You could smell it the minute you stepped off the plane. There was always a putrid oder hanging in the air.

He was 63 years old...Viet Nam finally got him 42 years after he returned home...I can't remember the unit he served with, I would have to check with my sister to see his DD214.
