Swift Fires Up To 150 Muslim Workers Following Ramadan Dispute

GREELEY — At least 130 Muslim workers at the north Greeley JBS Swift & Co. plant were fired Wednesday afternoon, apparently over a dispute involving breaks during Ramadan.

About 15 Greeley police officers were called to the scene by a Swift security guard as part of the termination. A security guard told police one terminated Swift worker had tried to hit him.

No arrests were made. The worker was escorted off the premises and police remained on the scene for peace-keeping purposes.

A union spokesman says the union will file grievances against the Greeley meatpacking company.

At issue is a request by Muslim workers to be able to take their lunch breaks at sunset to end their fast during Ramadan..............

Swift spokeswoman Tamara Smid said in a written statement that the workers were told they would be fired if they didn’t report to work when recalled. Smid didn’t specify how many workers were fired.

They sure did and it is completely within the rights of the employer to do so.

I would hope that the employees would have made a polite request (request mind you libs not a demand) before this all happened and that the employer would have given it a proper review and based their answer on the working conditions or the company.

The article also said the plant in Grand Island, Neb. had the same issue with employees last year and fired 70 employees many of whom returned to work a week later.

I don't really get why this is happening now, there are no extra paryers needed over the Ramadan, it's just a period of fasting.

If I remember my Comparative Western Religions class, during Ramadan Muslims fast during the day and then eat at the end of the day. I think it is at sunset that they break the fast, but hey this is America, they can squeeze an extra hour or so by breaking the fast before sunset. My guess is they simply want to eat lunch at the end of the work day.

problem is there is a lunch break mid day.....you know 4hrs of work 1 hour of lunch and 4 hours of work.....

it is a factory the rules prexisted their hiring.....so work your two shifts and eat after you are done.....

There may very well be a reason that the company will not or can not accomodate the request. It could be as simple as the fact that those 150 or so employees are instrumental in the process and that if the company allowed these employees to take lunch an hour before closing rather than mid day it would shut down the entire plant one extra hour a day or that all non-Muslim employees would have to work the same schedule as the Muslims in order to keep work flowing.

And schools, unlike businesses, don't lose money when they are closed. In fact, they can save all those energy costs for lighting, etc.
