New drilling is only a part of the greater solution, though. We need to start being realistic about our driving habits themselves, but our government at least won't do that. This is part of why both sides have become so rabid on this topic.

Let's say, for instance, we try this: We do some new drilling in ANWR, but we shift the caribou onto a private reserve as a part of the process, so that they still can mate and carry on (Alaska is pretty big folks, I'm certain we could find some space somewhere), but as well tack on a bill to switch out government vehicles to hybrids (This is actually a hell of alot of vehicles, actually), it would get shot down, why?

for the dems, because of the new drilling, and the reps would throw a fit over both the reserve, and as well, on the point of the hybrids, despite it getting them both what they want. This is the problem, we don't have real leaders anymore (I include both candidates for pres in this statement), just squabbling children in nice suits.
