ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - Alaska's legislature late Thursday approved a one-time $1,200 payment to nearly every state resident as a way for them to handle the highest energy prices in the United States.

The payments are in addition to the usual annual dividend from the state's oil trust fund.

The legislature also repealed the state's 8-cents-per-gallon gasoline tax for a year.

When coupled with annual payments Alaskans get from a trust fund related to the state's oil and natural gas production, nearly every adult and child is expected to get $3,200 or more this October.

Gov. Sarah Palin said the so-called "resource rebate" of $1,200 will help Alaskans deal with escalating energy costs.

Alaskans pay an average of about $4.65 a gallon for gasoline, and in some rural areas it costs about $10 a gallon, while the national average is about $3.85 for a gallon of regular, according to travel group AAA..........

I wonder if any of that national treasure will trickle down to the lower 48?

How is it socialist, they aren't taking money from one segment of the population (the rich) and giving it to another (the poor). They are giving the money to every single resident.

basically, Alaska had a budget surplus due to oil revenue from something unheard of in the rest of the US.....drilling for oil......and she refunded part of it to taxpayers.....I wish she was MY governor.....or VP.....or president......

Tell me there Psycho, how is this ANY DIFFERENT FROM THE FED GIVING OUT THE STIMULUS CHECKS????

Let me get this straight the Alaskan Government had a surplus so they refund that back to the ORIGINAL tax payers in the form of help for escalating energy cost. YOU think thats socialist, I find it fiscally responsible of the Alaskan government taking care of its constituents!!!!! The rest of the freaking states could learn something from this woman........

Sounds to me like you are decribing a very concerned state for it's citizens governed by a realist.

If I have to explain to you why Alaska pays such prices for gas, you wouldn't understand.

Come on David....you can do better then this!

If any governmental body whether it be federal, state or local has a surplus of cash then they have overtaxed someone and need to return the money to the rightful owners, the people.
