CHICAGO - A milder type of mental decline that often precedes Alzheimer’s disease is alarmingly more common than has been believed, and in men more than women, doctors reported Monday.

Nearly a million older Americans slide from normal memory into mild impairment each year, researchers estimate, based on a Mayo Clinic study of Minnesota residents.

Power 3 Medical in Texas has developed a test that will diagnose alzheimers very early. They are still in the testing or marketing phase but it looks pretty good. I found their studies interesting.

Alzheimer's is a tough thing to deal with. My grandmother had it, she passed away in 2005. About the time she died my mother started showing signs of the same thing and she is now pretty far along, so I've basically been around it for almost ten years now. The thing about it is the only way to diagnose it 100% is an autopsy, and obviously once you are to that point it doesn't make any difference.

The only thing I can pass along is if someone is showing signs have them check out every possibility. Essentially let process of elimination be the dianoses. There are some medications that slow down the process of Alzheimer's, but obviously no cure. My mother has been taking Razadyne (not sure of the spelling) and it seemed to help a little.
