(Vanity Fair)

In a little intramural joshing in the magazine world, Vanity Fair today posted a send-up of the by-now infamous New Yorker cover meant to be a satire of attacks on Barack Obama's patriotism.

The New Yorker's version showed Democrat Obama in Muslim garb fist-bumping his wife Michelle while the American flag burned in the fireplace under a portrait of Osama bin Laden.

Vanity Fair's shows Republican John McCain, using a walker, fist-bumping his wife Cindy while the Constitution burns in the fireplace with a portrait of President Bush over the mantle.

"We here at Vanity Fair maintain a kind of affectionate rivalry with our downstairs neighbors at The New Yorker," the magazine's editors say, explaining their spoof. "We play softball every year, compete for some of the same stories, and share an elevator bank. (You can tell the ones who are headed to the 20th floor by their Brooklyn pallor and dog-eared paperbacks.) And heaven knows we’ve published our share of scandalous images, on the cover and otherwise. So we’ve been watching the kerfuffle over last week’s New Yorker cover with a mixture of empathy and better-you-than-us relief.

"We had our own presidential campaign cover in the works, which explored a different facet of the Politics of Fear, but we shelved it when The New Yorker’s became the “It Girl” of the blogosphere. Now, however, in a selfless act of solidarity with our downstairs neighbors here at the Condé Nast building, we’d like to share it with you."

Only thing I'd change, is that I'd have the burning Constitution turned to the words "Congress shall make no law....", that being the part McCain is most famous for violating with his McCain-Feingold act. (Refusing to protect the border isn't unconstitutional, it's within the purview of the House and Senate to let in hordes of foreigners if they want to. It's merely a horrible idea)

But why the fist bump with Cindy? The reason that had such a big impact in the Obama cartoon, was because Michelle had said some pretty inflammatory things, and the fist-bump was Baracks's way of saying he agreed with what she said without his actually admiting it verbally.

Has Cindy said similarly inflammatory things? I haven't paid much attention to her, only McCain. If she did, then the fist-bump would make sense, and would be as good a parody as the Obama one was. If not, then it's just a strange and meaningless recopying by an artist who clearly didn't understand what it was.

I haven't heard of her saying anything like Michelle, she actually seems to love all people regardless of skin color and really loves her country. She is actually a very amazing person who has accomplished more in a year of her life than Michelle in all of her years at Princeton. If you just read the Wiki biography you will get an idea how truly special this person is. Of course all you will hear from the Dems is that she is heir to the Anheiser/Busch fortune which isn't true at all.
