Since it is already the 4th over here, I get to be to first to wish you all a happy 4th on the 4th. I hope all have a safe and fun day. I wish I was home to be with my family and friends. Think of all the servicemen and women in the same situation, and say a prayer (if that is your thing) for all of them.

Thank you! My thanks to all those who have served, are serving, will serve in the military. Also to police, fire fighters, paramedics, and all who protect and serve.

I was a bit saddened today, while driving with my son to his university to get the paperwork done for his apartment, make sure financial aid was squared away, and fill out the forms for his graduation audit. With 4 hours to kill on the ride each way, we had to talk. ;)

We were discussing his coming winter internship and what he thought. He said, "Mom, it just seems to me that law enforcement has lost its way. The whole idea of 'protect and serve' has turned into another way for so many municipalities to increase their coffers. It's wrong, but mostly it may be dangerous." I responded that he only needed to speak to his uncle to realize not all are like that. He responded, "Well, that's well and good for XXXXXX, they have enough money to pay for what they are doing, but it's not the norm. Many towns are telling their police personnel that they need to collect the seat belt fines, etc., to pay their salaries. Even in XXXXX, what do you think may happen when Uncle XXX and a few others retire?"

He's far from disillusioned, but is heading there. He's considering going into security rather than police work. He's also considering the marines, though he's really against the war in Iraq. At the same time he seems to recognize there is a great threat. Scary times.
