Mugabe to West: "Go Hang"

Mugabe is a thug, plain and simple. He's certainly among the top two or three despots in the world today. While I don't advocate US military involvement in Zimbabwe, it would be nice if the African Union condemned Mugabe's oppression of the opposition in the recent election.

A spokesman for Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has rejected Western criticism of the country's disputed presidential run-off election.

At an African Union summit in Egypt, George Charamba said the West had no basis to speak about the situation - and can "go hang a thousand times".

Looks like the African Union isn't going to stand for it:

African leaders on Tuesday called for dialogue between Zimbabwe's political foes and a national unity government following President Robert Mugabe's widely discredited reelection.

A two-day African Union summit agreed "to encourage President Robert Mugabe and the Movement for Democractic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai to initiate dialogue with a view to promoting peace, stability," in a final resolution.

The summit, held amid mounting Western calls for sanctions, also decided "to support the call for the creation of a government of national unity, to support SADC (Southern African Development Community) facilitation".

The SADC regional body has already been leading mediation efforts between Mugabe and Tsvangirai.

That is a great suggestion, after all Obama is a great unifier, he is willing to unconditionally talking with leaders of other countries.

Mugabe does what he does because he knows he has the backing of Russia and China. Many African and Asian dictators do the same.
Mugabe is smarter than most give him credit for. He realizes that most countries that have the means to oppose him don't care enough to do so.
Unlike the radical Islamic groups, who kill people and then tell the word about it, Mugabe kills people and tells no one. The Iraq debacle has given him a virtual smoke screen to do whatever he wants.

You should read some of the stories:
**All government workers were "instructed" to vote for Mugabe. Otherwise, they lost their jobs and were threatened with violence.
**After the first election, which Mugabe lost by a wide margin, a few villages openly celebrated. Most of them were later bulldozed, with citizens massacred and dumped into common graves.
**Mugabe's forces held organized "rallies" for his candidacy. Those who did not participate were not allowed to buy food.
**Thousands of opposition supporters were killed. Including women and children.

But Zimbabwe is a black, non-Muslim country. So we close our eyes and fail to care.

I think South Africa is tried of helping them out, too. How many times have they bailed Mugabe out financial trouble withe IMF and ADB? Makes you wonder why they would care about punative damages payable by Zimbabwe?
