Do you eat at Subway? Homeschoolers need not apply.

So Subway® restaurants (http://www.subwayfreshbuzz.com/kids/contest.aspx) has a story writing contest for kids preK - 6th grades.

Children may choose from any of four “story starters”…


1.) “The Mysterious Meatball: When the invitation to the Meatball came in the mail…”
2.) “Turkey Doesn’t Live Here Anymore: There was a loud knock on the door, but when Salami Sam opened it…”
3.) “The Race to Red Onion Ranch: Everyone gathered in the center or town for the start of the race except…”
4.) “Nothing Better: The smell of fresh bake bread coming from the store was so good that…”

That's fine and dandy until you read the rules.


Contest is open only to legal US residents, over the age of 18 with children in either elementary, private or parochial schools that serve grades PreK-6. No home schools will be accepted.

I'll also highlight the two typos on their page.

Under the 'Here's what you can win' section the word basket is spelled b-a-s-t-k-e-t.

Yeah letting home schooled kids in would be an unfair advantage to the others. And they may be able to spell as well. Apparently it don't take no education to be a sandwich maker at subway, or to work as an executive their either.

I never eat anything from subway, so my boycott of them won't mean anything.

Subway sure is being short sighted especially in light of the fact that the national spelling bee contest was won by a kid that was home schooled. What with the prevailing crap that we get out of school kids in this day and age I doubt if they will find many who are up to the task of this contest.

California is an anti home school state. They have tried to legislate that parents go to jail if they homeschool their kids.

So it is safe to say that anyone with socialist agendas (aka the dems) would be the ones supporting anti home schools...I mean think about it. Teachers dont teach the basics anymore. They teach their opinions. It started in cllege and seems to have a trickle down effect to now even grade schools are affected.


But it makes sense why dems would hate home schooling. Then THEY cant re write history, THEY WANT to control what goes into your childs mind.

While I completely support homeschooling and parents right to educate their children in any manner they choose I think a Subway boycott regarding this issue is a little silly.

I realize with all the attacks against homeschoolers people are getting justifiably worried, irritated and down right angry. I completely empathize with them and If my kids had not been in the school at my church I would have had my wife homeschool them.

That said, I really don't see this as an attack on homeschoolers by Subway. From a corporate viewpoint they are trying to get the most bang for their buck. If they give to an individual family all they can say is we gave this family $5k worth of athletic equipment but if they give it to a school then they can say that they are giving back to the community through local schools. Additionally if they give it to a school many families benefit not just one. Not to mention it is a business, are we going to encroach on their freedom to maximize their good will.

I think that homeschoolers should stand and fight vigorously for their rights. I will back you up and support your fights when they're legitimate fights. I think this is just a knee jerk reaction to all the pressure from our socialist government interfering in our lives, particularly here in California.

I would hate to see homeschoolers further marginalized by what I think is really a non-issue.

We have a Christian school of about 50 kids here in Los Angeles, the teachers are basically volunteers and we keep our tuition low to give more parents the opportunity to send their kids here. It personally costs me about $350/year for my child to participate in 2 sports.

$5k in athletic equipment would be a huge boost to our school. If our school got $5k in athletic equipment it would free up money to buy more academic supplies and expand our reading as well as our language programs.

I think you make another good point. Some families would redirect the assets in a way not intended by Subway. Subway also gets to take credit for encouraging and sponsoring physical fitness among school kids.

As far as calling, "Americans fat". Look around, we are. The majority of the people I know are 20lbs or more overweight.
