No more personal responsibility! Government will take care of things for you. What a joy!

Woman's Dead Body Lies in Flat for 35 years

May 16, 2008

ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) -- Governments have changed. War erupted and ended. Neighbors had children, and then grandchildren. But Hedviga Golik never left her tiny apartment in Croatia's capital -- until her mummified body was carried out this week, 35 years after she died.

Police said Friday that no one ever reported Golik missing and no one has come to claim her body.

Residents of her loft building in downtown Zagreb had broken into Golik's flat after deciding that the apartment should belong to them, and not to her. Startled by the remains in bed, they called police.

Forensics experts said Golik likely died in 1973, about the time a neighbor last saw her. Expert Davor Strinovic said she seemed to have died of natural causes, but "it's almost impossible to say for certain" after so much time.

Some of Golik's neighbors claimed she had talked about going abroad.

Experts said her windows had been open, likely diminishing the smell. It remained unclear who -- if anyone -- was paying her bills and who exactly owned the apartment. In the 1970s, when Golik died, apartments were state-owned.

Neighbors now argue the apartment should be divided among the remaining tenants.

The discovery of Golik's body on Tuesday prompted media debates on how it is possible for a woman to die so long ago without anyone noticing. One local journalist said it showed people were becoming more alienated.

That's the problem with socialism. it provides the allusion that you dont have to worry about your neighbor because government is while making sure no one is taken care of.

False on it's premise, idiots. When neighbors ignore their neighbors there generally becomes a diffusion and ultimately a war. You like it? Go fight it!!!!!!

Don't depend on your government to solve your animosities, dig it? And damned sure don't depend on the abilities of your next door neighbors 18 year old kid to defend your own ignorances!!!!!!!!!!

Personally, we as a society should take of each other, and government is their as a safety net for those who truly need it.

But then again, i dont consider that socialism

With only a spelling difference I agree with you, martin. There will never be their and visa versa.

It's not. Socialism merely encourages people to ignore each other, since it's the government's job to take care of people.

we, ourselves do the ''ignoring'', i don't think we can blame a gvt system, but we should blame our own individual selves for allowing our feelings and compassion for fellow human beings, be ''waxed cold''....it's a me, me, me and me society.... and not a ''love thy neighbor, as thyself'' society. :(

I thought the sentence above was fascinating. It sounds like a pack of Socialist wolves.

So, this sort of incident is limited to primarily socialist countries? Or is it exclusive to cultures who do not take care of their aging, extended families, which tend to be socialist leaning? Perhaps she was a mean old bag no one really knew or liked and had no family? Maybe the friends and family she did have were killed or dislocated due to war? It's possible.

All possible scenarios. I think the point is simply that the more societies look to the gov't to solve their problems, the less likely they are to feel the need to care for their fellow man. I see it as an extrapolation, but worthy of debate.

A few moments later, I was also thinking of the scavenger mentallity that must affect post-war societies such as Croatia. Government certainly plays a large role in the mentality of it's citizens, however, I'd blame lack (which can and is often due to past/present government) and post war economic conditions (government again?) on their vulture like mentality than I would blame socialism. They have been involved in more than one war since the 70's - almost in a constant state of war and recovery war and recovery since.......well a long time.

No doubt a sucky way to live for many reasons. I do blame Socialism, though, for planting the idea that property should be divvied up in the first place. I cannot imagine someone raised in a capitalist society going there in their mind.

I mostly blame severe poverty for planting that idea. As I said, being in a constant state of war (fight or flight) and recovery from war can leave people with different ideas of survival and how to attain survival. Sure, socialism may contribute to it in the same way that things such as housing was/is scarce in places such as communist Russia, although I can't imgaine someone raised in a country that has not experienced war as they have to have that mentallity - regardless of their government system. Blaming socialism in it's entirety is just silly. I'm not defending socialism, mind you, just looking at the realities of living in a war torn country such as Croatia might really be like.

They're also experiencing a real estate boom right now. That is, FDI from the outside is pouring into the country and into the pockets of private landowners..... if they can find all the people named on the deed!

Croatia's cultural mind set and economic conditions are the direct result of socialism?

I don't think Croatia considers itself a socialist country anymore, anyway. And further, even the most capitalistic of societies have the lowest filth living in their GYNOURMOUS and NUMEROUS public housing projects. That is what the article is really about, isn't it? Public housing and what dwells within the social housing units that grace our beautiful cities. Throw the bums on the street! :laugh2:
