"Cinco de Mayo commemorates an important moment in the history of Mexico's path to freedom. On this day in 1862, a small group of Mexican troops overcame overwhelming force to win the Battle of Puebla. Today, we join together to remember the sacrifice that these Mexican patriots endured, as well as the struggles of all those around the world striving for freedom. We recognize as well the important friendship that exists between our country and Mexico, and celebrate the many contributions Mexican-Americans have made to our society, culture, security and economy."

The Cinco de Mayo statement can now also be found on the Spanish section of the official campaign website at http://espanol.johnmccain.com, which the campaign launched today. This part of the website will feature regular updates in Spanish throughout the election.

Finally, as part of his commitment to talking with all Americans during this presidential campaign, the McCain presidential campaign announced that John McCain will attend the La Raza Annual Convention in San Diego on July 14, 2008.

I hate this --- I saw it on TV tonight. If John McCain wants to run for president of Mexico, why doesn't he go South of the Border?

I've been protesting my bank, BB&T, constantly running Spanish instructions till you can't tell WHAT you're supposed to do at the ATM, Spanish on all the brochures in preference to English, and this is a mid-Atlantic East Coast chain!

Evidently everyone thinks Mexico is simply going to move North, and John McCain wants to be their president. He clearly doesn't care about the rest of us.

While I am not thrilled by the obvious pandering by the McCain campaign, I do recognize that there is an entire bloc of voters out there whose first language is Spanish rather than English. More often than not, these folks are more comfortable dealing with people and information in their native tongue These, obviously, would be legalized citizens formerly citizens of Mexico and points south. This bloc represents perhaps the largest foreign language speaking group of voters in the U.S. and it would be foolhardy for McCain to ignore them, especially when you consider that they tend to vote Democrat.

While I tend to believe that immigrants from anywhere in the world should learn the language of their adopted land, and learn it well, the sad truth is that it generally takes at least one generation for families to assimilate. Like it or not, I can't blame the man for attempting to reach out to all potential voters.

That being said, he sure as hell isn't my type of conservative. But then again, few are.
