is an engaging read that doesn't fail to inspire with the story of the Berlin Airlift and its impact on the military, foreign policy and Germany. The stories of the American soldiers and airmen involved in it in particular are eloquent in their portraits of Americans doubly enraged by a great Soviet injustice and affront to America's security.

Generally well-written if not a tad winded here and there, it returns the reader back to a time when our military and country was viewed around much of the world with awe, hope and respect.

What started as an act of compassion and solidarity by Air Force pilots with emaciated, depressed German children (dropping candy in excess parachutes) became a true hearts and minds, people power campaign that educated Washington on the possibilities of fusing American ideals with national goals using methods other than war and high-context diplomacy and venturing forth into the world with that confidence, while saving hundreds of thousands of Berliners from sure starvation at the hands of the Soviets.
